Following emergency response to the landslide and floods in and around Freetown on 14 August 2017, the UN system in Sierra Leone is now supporting national recovery.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Abnormal rainfall patterns during 2014/2015 have contributed to a spike in food insecurity, which is currently affecting at least 27.4 m people regionally (and this excludes Angola, which has yet to publish official figures; and Madagascar, which did not present to SADC, but where 1.9 m people are food insecure, of which 460,000 people are severely so). In Malawi and Zimbabwe, 2.8 m and 1.5 m people are food insecure respectively.

Objectives and activities

In 2015, as the Millennium Development Goals reach their deadline, the world can reflect on real progress. Since 1990, thanks to the actions of millions of people around the globe, extreme income poverty has been cut by almost two-thirds, child mortality has fallen by more than half, and more children are attending primary school than ever before.

But these achievements tell only part of the story.

While we must continue to provide assistance to countries in crisis, fragile states and the world’s poorest, development assistance must be more than a tool to merely alleviate the effects of poverty. It must also be a tool to spur transformation. Since 2010, the United States has sharpened the focus of our global development investments to achieve sustainable development outcomes, leverage increased private capital flows, diversify the range of private sector and nongovernmental partners with whom we work, and invested in game-changing innovations.

Melissa Parke, Minister for International Development, has welcomed the United Nations report showing that the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) are making good progress.

Released by the United Nations Secretary General in Geneva, the Millennium Development Goals Report 2013 says that some of the MDGs are already met, and many other targets are within reach by the 2015 deadline.

MDGs that have already been achieved include:

  • halving extreme poverty (MDG 1)
