OVERVIEW

• Countries in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region experience a range of natural hazards, including droughts, earthquakes, floods, forest fires, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, and volcanoes. El Niño and La Niña phenomena occur periodically, exacerbating the impacts of hydrometeorological events in the LAC region. Unplanned urban expansion, environmental and natural resource degradation, and land-use management challenges also increase populations’ vulnerability and exposure to natural hazards.

Colombo, 12 September 2017 – The inception workshop of the Climate Resilient Integrated Water Management Project, which was developed by the Ministry of Mahaweli Development and Environment with the technical assistance of the UNDP Sri Lanka was held today in Colombo.

This is one of the first projects financed by the newly established Green Climate Fund, with a funding envelope of USD 38.08 Million, which will be utilized to serve climate vulnerable communities in three river basins of Sri Lanka’s Dry Zone, Mi Oya, Yan Oya, and Malwathu Oya.

  • Asylum seekers from Central African Republic continued to arrive in Bas-Uele and Nord Ubangi provinces. This new influx started mid-May and was triggered by violence, tensions and fear about imminent attacks in border areas, namely in the city of Bangassou, Bema and Mobayi.

■ Asylum seekers from Central African Republic continued to arrive in Bas-Uele and Nord Ubangi provinces. This new influx started mid-May and was triggered by violence, tensions and fear about imminent attacks in border areas, namely in the city of Bangassou, Bema and Mobayi.

■ Estimates from local authorities, General Direction of Migration (DGM) and National Commission for Refugees (CNR) suggest that over 60,000 asylum seekers crossed the border into DRC since May. UNHCR and CNR will further verify.

I. Introduction

1. In his letter dated 25 January 2017, the President of the Security Council informed the Secretary-General that the Council had decided to send a mission to the Lake Chad Basin region (Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria) from 1 to 7 March 2017. The mission was led jointly by the Permanent Representatives of France, Senegal and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The composition of the mission and its terms of reference are set out in annexes I and II to the present report.

Summary

The present report has been prepared pursuant to General Assembly resolution 46/182, in which the Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report annually to the Assembly and the Economic and Social Council on the coordination of emergency humanitarian assistance. The report is also submitted in response to Assembly resolution 71/127 and Economic and Social Council resolution 2016/9. The period covered by the report is from January to December 2016.
