As we at Lutheran World Relief anticipate the tremendous humanitarian challenges we might face in the coming year, a quote from Desmond Tutu comes to mind: “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all the darkness.”
Asia: Catching the wave of success
As the highest performing region under the Millennium Development Goals, Asia has much to shout about. Among other notable achievements, poverty has been slashed by more than two-thirds, great strides have been made in the delivery of healthcare, and primary school enrolments have surged.
The results are remarkable for a continent that is the largest on earth and home to more than half the world’s population.
BALTIMORE, Dec. 1, 2015—Lutheran World Relief, an international NGO working in 35 countries to develop sustainable solutions to poverty and food insecurity, marked #GivingTuesday by releasing its 2016 Early Warning Forecast of regions it is monitoring for potential humanitarian crises over the coming year.
The Annual Report is prepared by the Executive Directors of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the International Development Association (IDA)--collectively known as the World Bank--in accordance with the by-laws of the two institutions. The President of the IBRD and IDA and the Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors submits the Report, together with the accompanying administrative budgets and audited financial statements, to the Board of Governors.
The Syria Crisis is the largest political, humanitarian and development challenge of our time.
It has taken enormous casualties, caused widespread destruction, forced massive displacement, rolled back development progress and threatened generations across Syria and neighbouring countries. Caritas aims to reduce the incidence and impact of poverty in Aotearoa New Zealand and around the world. There is no single solution to poverty and it can take many forms. Each response must be context-specific and often multifaceted. Caritas’ approach places people at the centre of development and seeks the good of every person and the whole person. It is community based, and recognises the importance of family and community in a person’s life.

Yemen: The 9 August Al Jawf ceasefire has been broken. Access to people affected by the conflict in Al Jawf is extremely limited due to persistent insecurity, and it is very difficult to obtain information. Almost 3,000 people have died in violence since the National Dialogue Conference took place on 25 January.

oPT: 583 have been reported killed and over 100,000 displaced since Operation Protective Edge began on 8 July. There are urgent needs for essential drugs, shelter, water, and food assistance in the Gaza Strip, requiring greater humanitarian space.

Central African Republic: Renewed clashes between anti-balaka and Seleka fighters occurred in several locations in central, northern, and southwestern provinces. MISCA soldiers are being redeployed to cover areas previously secured by the Chadian contingent. A Christian religious leader was killed and four were abducted in two northern towns, while 30 Christian civilians were reportedly killed in a central town.
• 1.9 MILLION IRAQIS OR 5.7% OF THE POPULATION ARE FOOD DEPRIVED, CONSUMING LESS THAN THE AVERAGE DIETARY ENERGY REQUIREMENTS OF 2,161 KILOCALORIES PER DAY.
• A FURTHER 4 MILLION IRAQIS OR 14% OF THE POPULATION ARE VULNERABLE TO FOOD INSECURITY

The just-published 2012 Annual Report on Switzerland's International Cooperation sets out a unified strategy that encompasses – for the first time – humanitarian aid, technical and financial cooperation, economic and trade policy measures, and cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe. SDC Director-General Martin Dahinden and State Secretary and Director of SECO Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch stress that this important milestone has been welcomed both by Parliament and by public opinion.

The Marshlands are of fundamental importance to Iraq, a unique eco-system providing local inhabitants with an essential source of habitat and livelihoods. Not only are the Marshlands an important national heritage and ecological area, but they have also played a vital role in the economic and social advancement of the people of Iraq.
At their peak the Marshlands were considered to be the largest wetland ecosystem in the Middle East, and they played an important role in global ecosystems by supporting rare wildlife and rich biodiversity.
