  • An estimated 1.42 million people are affected (including 756,000 children) by the drought, including 800,000 people food insecure in the provinces of Cunene, Namibe and Huila. There are an estimated 95,877 Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) caseloads in the 7 most affected provinces, with 44,511 cases of SAM registered in the Provinces of Huila, Cunene and Namibe.

Appeal History:

  • This Emergency Appeal was launched on 22 January 2016 for CHF 664,073 Swiss francs to enable the IFRC to support the Lesotho Red Cross Society (LRCS) to respond to the food security needs of 4,500 drought affected beneficiaries for six months. The strategy entails the immediate provision of food assistance (carried out through cash transfer programming) and strengthening community livelihoods in three districts of Mafeteng, Thaba Tseka and Qacha’s Nek to allow vulnerable households to meet their basic food needs.

Following consultations between the Department of Political Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat and the Permanent Mission of Angola to the United Nations, I have the honour to transmit herewith the Great Lakes Regional Strategic Framework 2016-2017 (see annex), which shall be officially launched during the open debate.

Le Grand Sud de Madagascar est habité de 1,8 millions d’habitants, c’est une zone aride qui ne reçoit qu’une moyenne annuelle de 500 mm de pluies. Le taux de pauvreté y atteint jusqu’à 90%, c’est le plus élevé du pays ; le taux de malnutrition chronique chez les enfants moins de 5 ans se situe entre 32% à 40%, et le taux moyen d’insécurité alimentaire chronique est également parmi les plus élevés du pays. En février 2016, une situation d’urgence humanitaire s’est de nouveau installée dans le Grand Sud du pays.

15 mars 2016 _|_ Genève – Selon de nouvelles estimations de l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS), 12,6 millions de personnes sont décédées en 2012 du fait d’avoir vécu ou travaillé dans un environnement insalubre – ceci représentait près d’un quart des décès dans le monde. Les facteurs de risque environnementaux, tels que la pollution de l’air, de l’eau et des sols, l’exposition aux substances chimiques, le changement climatique ou le rayonnement ultraviolet, contribuent à la survenue de plus de 100 maladies ou traumatismes.
