$130 MILLION TO SUPPORT NEPAL’S EARTHQUAKE RELIEF AND RECOVERY

USAID’s commitment to Nepal has stood the test of time. In the aftermath of the devastating April 25 earthquake, our commitment remains stronger than ever. On June 25, 2015, the United States government announced $130 million to support Nepal’s earthquake relief and recovery needs. This contribution builds upon USAID’s investments on disaster preparedness, and is only the beginning of our contribution to Nepal’s earthquake recovery, which will span multiple years.

Each year, in the days leading up to holiday gatherings across the United States, stoves and ovens put in a lot of hours.

Many are used to cook turkeys; some roast more than one. Stovetops steam green beans, simmer gravies, and cook cranberries down to a sauce.

Community leaders from Daku Village of the Rewa Delta area, today formally committed their community’s participation in a climate change adaptation activity, delivered through USAID’s Coastal Community Adaptation Project (USAID/C-CAP).

As part of the agreement, Daku will receive infrastructure support for their drainage management system which will greatly reduce flooding, associated water-borne diseases and property damage caused by the rising waters.

South Sudan Becomes the World’s Newest Nation

On July 9, the Republic of South Sudan declared its independence, marking the culmination of the six-year Interim Period laid out in the landmark 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement that ended Sudan’s long civil war. Independence was a result of the January 2011 referendum that gave the people of South Sudan the opportunity to democratically choose their future. Nearly 99 percent of those who voted chose secession.

USAID Responds to Crisis in Abyei and Southern Kordofan

USAID is responding to humanitarian needs in Sudan, including assisting tens of thousands of Sudanese affected by recent fighting in the Abyei Area and Southern Kordofan State.

The humanitarian community estimates that the Abyei Area clashes displaced nearly 111,000 people. In Southern Kordofan, unconfirmed estimates put the number of displaced at approximately 73,000.
