Foreword About 6.9 million people in Pacific island countries cannot access improved sanitation. More than 4.8 million cannot access improved water supplies. The United Nations General Assembly recognizes water and sanitation as basic human rights. The General Assembly has called upon governments and international organizations to provide financial resources, build capacity and technology transfer to provide safe, clean, accessible and affordable drinking-water and sanitation for all (UN Resolution A/RES/64/292).

The sustainable management of marine resources, mitigating climate change and integrating steps to address food security and non-communicable diseases are among the focus areas for strengthened cooperation between the European Commission and the Pacific Community.

A partnership agreement deepening the collaboration between the two international bodies was signed in Suva, Fiji, today by the European Commissioner for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, and the Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), Dr Colin Tukuitonga.

New Zealand today strongly reaffirms the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) as a key partner in providing high level scientific and technical services to help Pacific Islands address key development challenges. H.E. Linda Te Puni, New Zealand Consul General in New Caledonia, and Dr Colin Tukuitonga, Director-General of the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), signed a new grant funding agreement totaling NZD 13.89 million over the period 2014 to 2016.
