Context

Ethiopia matters to the UK for a range of development, foreign policy and security reasons. It is populous, poor, vulnerable but comparatively stable in the Horn of Africa. From a low base, Ethiopia’s growth and expansion of basic services in recent years have been among the most impressive in Africa. The UK Government has an opportunity to make our support more transformational and accelerate Ethiopia’s graduation from aid dependency.

The review of the situation of girls and boys in Ethiopia is produced by the Government of Ethiopia and the United Nations.It is the first such publication since 1993. Preparation started in 2010 with working papers based on literature reviews and field work in all regions. Findings were discussed in a series of meetings with civil servants and civil society. This information was used to help frame how the United Nations would support the Growth and Transformation Plan. To the extent possible the data has been updated as of the end of 2011.

The Minister of State for Trade and Development, Joe Costello T.D., begins a five-day visit to Ethiopia on Monday (23 January) to see the impact of Ireland’s development programme.

Minister Costello will visit schools, health centres and agriculture projects which are supported by Ireland and targeted at the poorest communities in Ethiopia.
