Aid organisation CARE International today issued a new report highlighting the top ten most underreported humanitarian crises of 2016.

The report, Suffering in Silence, features food crises in Eritrea, Madagascar, North Korea and Papua New Guinea; conflicts in Burundi, Lake Chad Basin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Sudan and last year’s monsoon floods in Bangladesh.

Executive Summary

Situated in the hilly eastern part of Myanmar, Kayah State borders Thailand to the east, Shan State to the north, and Kayin State to the southwest. Kayah is a small but complex state, rich in natural resources, cultural heritage and natural beauty. But Kayah has also been in a state of conflict for more than 60 years, and over the years, the cost of the conflict has been extensive—impacting directly and indirectly, the lives and the livelihoods of most of the people in Kayah, and many thousands who have fled.

CARE releases report about poverty in remote PNG

CARE Australia has today released a unique but bleak report, Rural Poverty in Remote Papua New Guinea, which provides a detailed statistical snapshot of life for remote communities in rural Papua New Guinea (PNG).

The report, which is a result of collaboration between CARE Australia and the Australian National University’s Development Policy Centre, highlights the ongoing issue of disadvantage in an area which is home to 15 percent of the country’s population.

In signing up to the Millennium Development Goals, world leaders have comitted to halving extreme poverty and hunger by 2015. By then, nearly =A3100 billion will have already beem spent this century fighting emergencies. Despite this investment, in two yeras since CARE demanded an overhaul of responses to food emergencies, another 100 million people have been pushed into hunger, no longer able to afford food.

Furthermore, the pain of hunger is being felt across the globe - from Afghanistan to Bolivia - as high food prices strip the world's poorest of enough to eat.
