A global review of the literature with a focus on the application of integrated pest and vector management in East Africa and Uganda
As the global population grows and incomes in poor countries rise, so too, will the demand for food, placing additional pressure on sustainable food production. Climate change adds a further challenge, as changes in temperature and precipitation threaten agricultural productivity and the capacity to feed the world's population. This study assesses how serious the danger to food security might be and suggests some steps policymakers can take to remedy the situation.
Using various modeling techniques, the authors project 15 different future scenarios for food security through 2050.
Despite a dozen years of solemn pledges by global leaders to take action to drastically decrease world hunger - promises made at the World Food Summit in 1996, the Millennium Summit of 2000 and high-level follow-up meetings held during the course of the present decade - food security in the world has deteriorated since 1995. This has contributed to the unacceptably slow pace of cutting the prevalence of malnutrition: between 1990 and 2005, the prevalence of child underweight in the developing world only fell from 30 to 23 percent.
