New IFRC Report calls for greater recognition and support for local humanitarian actors

The 2015 World Disasters Report – launched today by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) – examines the complexities and challenges local actors face in scaling-up and sustaining their humanitarian response.

MDG success springboard for new sustainable development agenda: UN report

New York, 6 July 2015—The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have produced the most successful anti-poverty movement in history and will serve as the jumping-off point for the new sustainable development agenda to be adopted this year, according to the final MDG report launched today by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

With the conflict in Syria entering its fifth year in 2015, Jordan is hosting 1.4 million Syrians, of whom 646,700 are refugees. Eighty-five per cent of refugees live outside camps in some of the poorest areas of the country, and a significant proportion are classified as extremely vulnerable. Approximately 23.5 per cent of all Syrian refugees are women, and almost 53 per cent are children, 18 per cent of whom are under five years of age.

Since 2003, The UN Country Team, in cooperation with the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), has supported humanitarian, reconstruction and development programmes, in areas ranging from immediate humanitarian assistance to modernization of state institutions.
Social service delivery, particularly in the areas of health, education, water and sanitation, have been priority areas at local level and in all programmes particular attention has been paid to the situation of women, children and young people.
