The just-published 2012 Annual Report on Switzerland's International Cooperation sets out a unified strategy that encompasses – for the first time – humanitarian aid, technical and financial cooperation, economic and trade policy measures, and cooperation with the countries of Eastern Europe. In Cox„s Bazar, Sirajganj and Kurigram district, flood has caused serious damage to local livelihood, economy and infrustructure. A total of 5,000 people are affected by flood in 8 districts. In this critical situation, Red Crescent Youth (RCY) in the mentioned affected districts has provided crucial support for affeacted people through distributing cash, conducting relief activities and delivering primary health care services. Respective ULOs, representatives of Frderation and Unit Youth members have worked collectively in relief activities.

Empowering HIV-positive women

In 2002, Françoise from Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was admitted to the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP) HIV and AIDS programme. “Food assistance has been my only reliable source of food, especially when I was sick and hospitalized,” recalls Françoise, who lost her husband to AIDS.

In addition to food, HIV-positive people can also receive training and non-food assistance from WFP’s partner organizations to allow them to learn valuable life skills, such as how to start a business, to help them become self-sufficient.

Famine conditions were still present in parts of southern Somalia when the previous humanitarian appeal for Somalia was launched in December 2011. On 3 February, the famine was declared over, largely due to the delivery of aid under extremely difficult conditions and the exceptional harvest at the start of 2012.
