In 2015/16 Lesotho has been severely affected by a El Niño-induced drought, leaving more than 60% of the rural population at risk of food insecurity. Following the announcement of the government appeal in January 2016, Humanitarian Country Team (HCT) and partners have managed to mobilise more than USD 40 million for the relief response. The priorities among the remaining gaps are the early recovery and resilience dimensions of the response. While the peak of El Niño weather phenomenon has subsided, its significant effects on population are set to continue until July 2017.

$130 MILLION TO SUPPORT NEPAL’S EARTHQUAKE RELIEF AND RECOVERY
USAID’s commitment to Nepal has stood the test of time. In the aftermath of the devastating April 25 earthquake, our commitment remains stronger than ever. On June 25, 2015, the United States government announced $130 million to support Nepal’s earthquake relief and recovery needs. This contribution builds upon USAID’s investments on disaster preparedness, and is only the beginning of our contribution to Nepal’s earthquake recovery, which will span multiple years.

According to Sudan’s High Council of Civil Defense, some 270,000 people throughout Sudan have been affected by flooding since June 2012, with over 36,000 homes damaged and over 14,000 houses destroyed. Kassala in eastern Sudan is the worst affected state, followed by South Darfur, Gedaref and Sennar States.
