Women generally suffer more than men do from the effects of climate change and natural disasters. This observation leads the SDC to develop a targeted strategy of supporting projects in which women play an important role in their own social and economic emancipation.

14 Mar 2017 description

“Finally, a project that deals with people as well as trees!” These words from an inhabitant of the Forêt des Pins (Pine Forest) sum up the Conservation and Enhancement of Biodiversity (CEB) programme put in place 13 years ago by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation in south-eastern Haiti. The project aims to save one of Haiti’s last remaining forests from deforestation, which is causing an increase in flooding and deadly landslides.

Smallholder farmers produce almost half the world’s food. Nevertheless, in developing countries many farming families live in poverty. Although in Switzerland farmers whose crops are destroyed by hail can claim compensation from their insurance companies, this is not the case with the overwhelming majority of smallholder farmers in developing countries. For them, floods, droughts or other extreme meteorological phenomena cause the loss of a large part of their livelihoods.

Switzerland's glaciers are melting. In less than 40 years, their surface has shrunk by almost 30 percent. Linked directly to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions, this relentless retreat can be observed around the globe, impacting negatively on the economy, the environment and society.

The impact of climate change on development is evident. People in developing countries are much more affected by climate change due to widespread poverty and lower resilience and coping capacities. The negative impacts of climate change threaten lives and livelihoods, as well as the hard-won gains achieved in reducing poverty in recent decades.

That is why Swiss development cooperation has been heavily engaged in interventions mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and improving the resilience and adaptation capacities of the affected populations in our partner countries.

Editorial

It is well known that the effects of climate change particularly impact vulnerable and disadvantaged population groups and, thereby, developing countries. That is why the SDC makes a major investment of around CHF 170 million every year in climate-friendly development projects. In so doing, the benefit is two-fold: poor people are better off and, at the same time, the climate is protected.

SDC Director-General Martin Dahinden and State Secretary and Director of SECO Marie-Gabrielle Ineichen-Fleisch stress that this important milestone has been welcomed both by Parliament and by public opinion.
