The dissolution of the Soviet Union, and the emergence of new states in Central Asia and the Caucasus created new political and security dynamics in these sub-regions. While the Caucasus was affected by the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, the threat of conflict over shared water resources continued to exist in Central Asia.

The Republic of Armenia is a small landlocked country in the Caucasus region, with an area of 29,743m² and a population of 2,998,600. The terrain is mostly mountainous, with fast flowing rivers, and few forests. The climate is highland continental, which means that Armenia is subject to hot summers and cold winters. Agricultural lands cover 69% of the territory and agriculture employs 44% of the working population, although agriculture´s contribution to the overall economy is declining.

Moscow -- The Government of Russia will be making a $10 million contribution towards UNDP programmes which support efforts to mitigate and prevent the negative effects of climate change in developing countries.

The announcement was made just a few days ahead of the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement and during the first annual Consultation Meeting on the partnership implementation between UNDP and the Russian Federation in Moscow this week.

0 . MAJOR CHANGES SINCE PREVIOUS VERSION OF THE HIP

Following a revision of the means required to fully implement the Commission's Strategy for Humanitarian Aid, the European Commission has decided to reduce the budget allocated to the 2014 DIPECHO HIP for Central Asia and Caucasus region by an amount of EUR 260 000. The total budget of this revised DIPECHO HIP is now EUR 7 740 000.
