The objective of the Kiribati Adaptation Program Phase III (KAPIII) is to ‘Improve the resilience of Kiribati to the impacts of climate change on freshwater supply and coastal infrastructure’. One of the infrastructure projects funded under KAPIII is the construction of rainwater harvesting systems on North Tarawa.

The Republic of Kiribati is made up of three main island groups:The Gilbert, Phoenix and Line Islands and one isolated raised limestone island, Banaba (Ocean Island).The groups of islands contain 33 scattered atoll islands, dispersed over 3.5 million square kilometers in the central Pacific Ocean.The three main island groups stretch over 800 kilometers from north to south and over 3,210 kilometers from east to west.

The Kiribati Adaptation Program (KAP) aims to reduce Kiribati’s vulnerability to climate change, climate variability and sea level rise by raising awareness of climate change, assessing and protecting available water resources and managing inundation.

KAP is a project of the Office of the President, Government of Kiribati and consists of three phases, running from 2003 to 2016:

The Office of Te Beretitenti (OB) through the Kiribati Meteorological Service (KMS) in partnership with the Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) through Climate and Ocean Support Program for Pacific (COSPPac) held a Kiribati Climate and Communication Workshop from November 18-22.

Together with the KMS climate section, the team delivered climate services stakeholder workshops and staff skills trainings. These sessions aimed to:
