EUCPM activation

  • Starting 2 March 2018, an oil spill occurred from Ecopetrol´s Lisama field 158 in the Santander province of Colombia. The leak was reportedly contained one month later. The spill primarily affected La Lizama and Sogamoso river ecosystems. The Sogamoso River is a tributary of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s largest source of water.

In many people’s minds, Bangladesh is synonymous with natural disasters: from cyclones to flooding, river erosion, droughts or earthquakes, the country is regularly battered by a wide range of hazards – and with climate change, these are set to increase in both frequency and intensity. These events often have an enormous impact on agricultural activities, which are key sources of livelihoods for more than 60% of the country’s total population.

EU and Austrian Development Cooperation provide 1.6 million Euro to increase resilience and adaptation to climate change

Maputo, 1 August 2016. The European Union and the Austrian Development Cooperation have provided a consortium of international organizations working in Mozambique with 1.6 million Euro to help vulnerable communities adapt to climate change and increase their resilience. Mozambique is experiencing its worst drought in 35 years as a result of the El Niño weather phenomenon.

The MIMU 3W gathers inputs from participating agencies on Who is doing What, Where, across Myanmar. It is currently conducted every 6 months.

218 agencies participated in the March 2016 3W, providing information on their activities in 22 sectors and 158 sub-sectors which have been defined by technical/sector working groups. Currently the 3W reporting is quite comprehensive for projects of INGO, UN and Red Cross agencies, but there is still likely to be under-reporting of the specific activities of field-based local NGOs and CBOs.

  • Over the next 48 h, thunderstorms with locally heavy rains may still affect south-eastern Brazil, including the state of Rio de Janeiro.

U.S.A. - Severe weather
• Severe weather, including thunderstorms, strong winds, heavy rain, hail and tornadoes affected several areas of Midwest and Mid-Atlantic United States on 21-23 June. Several tornadoes were reported in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas and Michigan on 22 June.
• According to media (as of 23 June), seven people were injured and several damages occurred, mostly in the area of Coal City in northern Illinois.

SITUATION

• The oil tanker Southern Star 7 collided with a cargo vessel in the Sundarbans natural region of south-western Bangladesh, in Shela river, on 9 December. The accident was caused due to low visibility in the area and triggered the spill of furnace oil in the river, where sanctuaries of protected wildlife exist.

• After collision, Southern Star 7 was partially sank, but was subsequently salvaged and towed ashore.

Following a revision of the means required to fully implement the Commission's Strategy for Humanitarian Aid, the European Commission has decided to reduce the budget allocated to the 2014 DIPECHO HIP for Central Asia and Caucasus region by an amount of EUR 260 000. The total budget of this revised DIPECHO HIP is now EUR 7 740 000.

Alleviating poverty through Disaster Risk Reduction in North-West Bangladesh

Context Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone countries in the world.
