WMO report highlights impacts on human safety, well-being and environment

6 November 2017 (WMO) - It is very likely that 2017 will be one of the three hottest years on record, with many high-impact events including catastrophic hurricanes and floods, debilitating heatwaves and drought. Long-term indicators of climate change such as increasing carbon dioxide concentrations, sea level rise and ocean acidification continue unabated. Arctic sea ice coverage remains below average and previously stable Antarctic sea ice extent was at or near a record low.

Las últimas semanas han sido extremadamente difíciles para varios Estados Miembros de la OEA, que han sido golpeados por 3 huracanes seguidos - Harvey, Irma y María. Han afectado a numerosas islas en el Caribe, especialmente Barbuda, en Antigua y Barbuda, la Mancomunidad de Dominica, Puerto Rico, Florida y amplias zonas de Houston, en Estados Unidos. Estos desastres se han cobrado muchas vidas, han causado miles de millones de dólares en daños a hogares, negocios e infraestructuras.

September 23, 2017 These past few weeks have been extremely difficult for several OAS Member States who have been hit by 3 hurricanes in quick succession - Harvey, Irma and Maria. They have affected several islands in the Caribbean, especially Barbuda, in the twin-island state of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Commonwealth of Dominica, Puerto Rico, Florida and large parts of Houston, in the United States. These disasters have claimed many lives and caused billions of dollars of damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

The IACHR calls on the States, the international community, international agencies, and all relevant actors to join in efforts to help those affected. It reiterates the importance of upholding international human rights obligations in all circumstances during the emergency and adopting measures to respond to the impacts of climate change.

    Experts predict the situation to deteriorate with El Niño and a weak hurricane season, with a limited amount of rain expected for the region.

  • ENVIRONMENTAL EMERGENCY:
    Colombia and Guatemala are affected by contamination of rivers that supply water to a considerable number of people. In Colombia the contamination results from oil pollution while Guatemala is still investigating the origin.
