JOHANNESBURG, Jan 9 2018 (IPS) - Conditioned that ploughing is the sure way to produce crops, Zimbabwean farmer Handrixious Zvomarima surprised himself by trying a different method. He planted cowpea seeds directly without tilling the land. It worked.

The new method tripled Zvomarima’s cowpea yield when many farmers did not harvest a crop following the El Nino-induced drought which affected more than 40 million people in Southern Africa.

The Oxfam Food Security for Tanzania Farmers programme (2012–15) aimed to increase food production and income, and improve the quality of life and food security for smallholder farmers, particularly women, in Tanzania. In Lushoto and Korogwe districts, it focused in particular on the domestic vegetable value chain (VVC), where rates of women’s participation are lower as compared to other agricultural crop production.

Overview

The temperatures this year are lowest recorded since 1968 (Dhaka Tribune 08/01/2018). As of 8 January 2018, at least 27 deaths have occurred due to cold-related illnesses (Disaster Forum 08/01/2018). Since 4 January 2018, a cold wave has been occurring across Bangladesh. The lowest temperature recorded is 2.60 Celsius, in Tetulia in Panchagarh district (Disaster Forum 08/01/2018).

Northern regions, such as Rangpur and Rajshahi divisions, are experiencing a severe cold wave.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow has continued to cause havoc in parts of China, disrupting traffic and bringing low temperatures.

Nineteen expressways in northeast China's Liaoning Province have been closed or controlled since snow started Sunday night, according to local transport authorities.

The snow will result in icy roads, the local observatory forecast Monday morning. Following the snow, Liaoning will see temperatures plunge by up to 10 degrees Celsius, the observatory said.

BEIJING, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Snow has killed 21 people in central and eastern China since Jan. 2, according to the China National Commission for Disaster Reduction.

Heavy snowfall has damaged houses, agriculture and power facilities in the provinces of Anhui, Jiangsu, Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Shaanxi, Shanxi, and Chongqing Municipality, it said.

More than 3,700 people have been relocated and 14,000 are in need of emergency assistance, said the commission, noting that over 700 houses had collapsed and nearly 2,800 were damaged.

Trinidad, 8 ene (ABI).- El alcalde de San Andrés, Wilson Lacoa, informó el lunes que en esa región de la provincia Marbán, al sur del Beni, se tiene comunidades aisladas por el agua de lluvia y rebalse de ríos.

"Tenemos comunidades que están incomunicadas como San Martín de Porres, Pedro Marbán, Laguna Azul y parte de Villa San Pedro", informó a los periodistas.

Explicó que los caminos a esas comunidades están llenos de agua, razón por la que se envió un bote para que las familias puedan salir a lugares altos y luego a la carretera Trinidad-Santa Cruz.
