Desde hace casi 45 años Blanca Saiki es productora de granos. Tiene 500 hectáreas de tierra en el distrito de Pirapó, a 420 kilómetros de Asunción, capital del Paraguay. En ellas cultiva soja, trigo, maíz, girasol, sorgo, canola, y demás productos agrícolas.

Blanca forma parte de los cerca de 70 mil productores de granos de Paraguay, responsables de más del 60% de las exportaciones del país y de alrededor del 17% del PIB nacional.

Blanca Saiki has been growing grains for almost 45 years. She owns 500 hectares in the district of Pirapó, 420 kilometres from Paraguay’s capital, Asunción. She cultivates soybean, wheat, corn, sunflower, sorghum, canola and other agricultural products.

Blanca is one of the nearly 70,000 grain producers in Paraguay who are responsible for more than 60 percent of the country's exports and around 17 percent of GDP.

KATHMANDU, Jan 17 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Nepali farmer Bhoj Raj Paudel had just left home to visit his parents when a hill above it collapsed, destroying his ranch and a paddy field and flooding a swathe of land downstream.

The landslide was 19 years ago, but he remembers it vividly.

"I am happy my family survived but whatever I owned was gone forever," the 53-year-old father of three told the Thomson Reuters Foundation from Simalpani, a small town on the foothills of the Himalayas some 200 km (130 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Driving through the rural landscapes of Somaliland, the views are breathtaking – towering blue mountains cutting the glaring sky over dry, thorn-bushed desert. Small dome-like temporary houses, known as ‘aqals’, dot the arid terrain.

These belong to nomads who have survived in these harsh conditions for generations, but for the first time, they are facing an uncertain future.

ROME, Jan 18 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - A major insurance scheme launched on Thursday aims to help up to 4 million poor people in Africa and Asia rebuild their lives after climate disasters, its backers said.

The insurance programme - covering droughts in Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Zambia and Cambodia, and tropical cyclones in Myanmar - will support mostly women farmers and their families.
