Situation Overview & Humanitarian Needs

In June UNICEF continued to support teachers across Donetsk and Luhansk oblast manage gender specific and age-sensitive education, as well as safe learning spaces with water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) facilities, on both sides of the line of contact. Having completed an assessment of 14 education facilities involved in Safe School modelling in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts, UNICEF facilitated the formulation of development plans for schools in the area.

Mr. President,

Thank you so much for the opportunity to brief the Security Council on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine.

After four years, millions of civilians – men, women and children – continue to bear the brunt of the conflict in eastern Ukraine, which has become yet another protracted crisis. Over 2,700 civilians have been killed and up to 9,000 injured since the outbreak of hostilities. The conflict-affected area is one of the most mine-contaminated in the world. Last year, landmines maimed or killed 238 civilians.

Highlights

  • In response to the deterioration of the nutritional situation (increase of the national global acute malnutrition prevalence from 11.9% in 2016 to 13.9% in 2017, SMART 2017) and the food insecurity threatening directly 890,000 persons in Chad, (IPC 2017) the Humanitarian Country Team, the Ministry of Public Health and ECHO are increasing their efforts on resource mobilisation and response to the crisis.

Introduction

World Humanitarian Data and Trends presents global and country-level data-and-trend analysis about humanitarian crises and assistance. Its purpose is to consolidate this information and present it in an accessible way, providing policymakers, researchers and humanitarian practitioners with an evidence base to support humanitarian policy decisions and provide context for operational decisions.
The information presented covers two main areas: humanitarian needs and assistance in 2016, and humanitarian trends, challenges and opportunities.

Highlights

  • UNICEF and its partners continued to respond to the cholera outbreak in the regions of Sila and Salamat. At the end of October 2017, 708 cases of which 23 deaths (death rate of 3.82%) were reported.

Highlights

  • Preliminary results of the SMART were published showing an increase in the national prevalence of the global acute malnutrition (from 11.9% to 13.9%). This rate exceed the emergency threshold of 15% in 12 out of 23 regions of the country.

Highlights

• A cholera outbreak is reported in Sila Region, eastern Chad, near the border with Sudan. 152 cases have been reported with 23 deaths by the end of August 2011

• 11 million USD have been allocated by the UFE CERF to Chad. 6.5 million USD will be used to support refugees and returnees from CAR with multipurpose cash, 3 million USD will ensure availability of basic services for CAR refugees and returnees (health, nutrition, education), and 1.5 million USD will be allocated to UNHAS to allow continued humanitarian access.
