Since the beginning of the crisis in South Sudan in December 2013, Kapoeta town has been the gateway through which most internally displaced persons (IDPs) have passed on their way to refugee camps in Kenya.

CONTEXT AND METHODS

Between late 2013 and 2017, intensification of conflict in north and central Iraq has resulted in large scale displacement with 1.9 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) identified across Iraq as of August 2018. Of these, approximately 95,000 to 116,000 IDPs are estimated to be residing in informal sites. In Anbar governorate, roughly 4,400 IDPs are estimated to be in informal sites.

This map illustrates satellite-detected landslide at in Bukalasi and surrounding areas located close to Mount Elgon in Manjiya District, Eastern Region, Uganda, as seen on Pleiades-1 satellite imagery with 0.5m resolution, collected on 13 October 2018. The analysis of the image shows that landslides and overflowed waters/mud seem to have hit Bukalasi along the stream and have potentially affected several houses and also caused cut of roads. This is a preliminary analysis and has not yet been validated in the field. Please send ground feedback to UNITAR - UNOSAT.

There are indications that displacement is rising, though the size of the displaced population is not clear. The rains have hit Nigeria hard this year. Seasonal rains in the most populous country of Africa are nothing new, yet the past month has seen unexpected levels of flooding which have already resulted in the death of more than 200 people.
