ICCO Cooperation, together with 8 other aid organizations in the Netherlands, started a campaign to raise funds for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi, Indonesia. On October 10, a national action day for Sulawesi was organized. TV and radio channels paid in their programs attention to the disaster and the humanitarian aid. In total, €11.255.853 was raised, a great result.

Innovative research in Ethiopia gives people a voice

ICCO, together with Tear, conducted innovative research on the food & nutrition security situation of poor rural households in Ethiopia. The research aimed to generate input for evidence-based dialogue between self-help groups and local authorities. Self-help groups are informal community-based organizations, that operate at local level and offer mutual socio-economic support to their members.

One year passed since the beginning of the exodus of an estimated 706,000 Rohingya refugees from Rakhine State, Myanmar to Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh following what the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights called a “textbook example” of ethnic cleansing. The newly arrived Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar have joined hundreds of thousands who were part of previous waves of displacement from Myanmar.

August 25 marks the one year anniversary of the Rohingya crisis. ICCO immediately responded to the unprecedented influx of Rohingya refugees in August, 2017 and have opened up offices in Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf to support both Rohingya refugees and the host community. To date, we have provided assistance in the areas of Food Security, Livelihoods, WASH and Psychosocial Support.

A consortium of three organizations, ICCO Cooperation, ZOA and War Child, has started an innovative approach for youth to improve their social and economic wellbeing through psychosocial and livelihoods support in Africa’s biggest refugee settlement, Bidi bidi.

The project “Agri-business Skilling for Youth in a Refugee context” (ABSYR) started at the beginning of the year 2018 and will last for 3 years. Agriculture is a backbone for livelihoods in Northern Uganda.

ICCO provides emergency relief in South Sudan, a country racked by conflict and where famine threatens. In the village of Ogwazu, near the town of Torit, ICCO provides assistance in the form of cash.

Josephine Kulan, 35 and mother of five children, is one of the women in Ogwazu who receives money from ICCO and Kerk in Actie. In her community women do most of the work: they look after the children and farm the land. Women also control family spending.

From 11th August onwards, severe floodings took place in Nepal and Bangladesh due to incessant rains. ICCO Cooperation, together with Kerk in Actie and ACT Alliance, helps the victims of the floods.

ICCO Cooperation and our local partner (CCDN), with support from Kerk in Actie (KiA), is supporting 600 flood-affected households from Rautahat District, Nepal. The distribution program is being conducted in collaboration with District Disaster Relief Committee (DDRC) of Rautahat.

These are the words of Mulu Yami, 28, from Bushoftu town in Ethiopia; she is one of the 30,000 smallholders who were reached by the Food Security and Rural Entrepreneurship Fund (FSRE fund). She has a poultry business. The FSRE Innovation Fund was financed by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ethiopia and managed by ICCO Cooperation on behalf of AgriProFocus.

This week trainings of the project “ACT for Humanitarian Capacity Development” take place at the global office of ICCO in Utrecht, the Netherlands. From 16th till 19th of August, 20 humanitarians from disaster prone countries receive training in how to deal with disasters and emergencies. In this way, communities will be better prepared to cope with disasters like the drought in Ethiopia, floods in Bangladesh and the earthquake in Nepal.

ICCO Cooperation spent €59,3 million on development programs in 39 countries in Africa, Latin Amerika and Asia in 2015. This can be found in the annual report ICCO Cooperation which shows the financial and operational results. A big part of the revenues came from the Dutch government. Other important donors were the European Union, the Dutch Postcode Lottery, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, USAID and IDB.

One year ago, Nepal was hit by a massive earthquake. Followed by a month of aftershocks, and a second major quake on May 12th.

More than 8,000 people lost their lives and 22,000 got injured. The earthquake destroyed 800,000 homes and large numbers of people lost their livelihoods.

Producing and marketing 20 tons of beeswax: that’s the aim for which ICCO Cooperation and the private company Olvea Burkina Faso, have been awarded a grant by USAID/Mali. The coming two years ICCO and Olvea will provide technical assistance to 3,000 women active in beeswax.
