WASHINGTON, June 13, 2018 – Climate financing by the world’s six largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) rose to a seven-year high of $35.2 billion in 2017, up 28 per cent on the previous year.

The EBRD is providing a loan of up to US$ 2 million in local currency to the Microfund for Women (MFW) for on-lending to female entrepreneurs in Jordan.

Access to finance through banks remains extremely limited for micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) in Jordan, a country that is also particularly exposed to the crisis caused by the civil war in neighbouring Syria, with refugees currently representing 20 per cent of Jordan’s population.

The conflict in Syria continues to drive displaced people to neighbouring countries. Almost one and half million refugees have fled to Jordan, of whom over 30 per cent are children. And most of them have already suffered five years of interrupted schooling.

This crisis seems likely to leave a generation of young people without prospects or any ability to build a prosperous future for their home countries.

The EBRD is joining international efforts to tackle the refugee crisis caused by the civil war in Syria, with a financing package that could be worth €900 million to support private sector and infrastructure projects in some of the worst affected countries.

Among the countries where the EBRD invests, Turkey currently houses more than 2 million refugees from Syria alone, while Jordan has an estimated 1.4 million people who have fled their homes.
