(New York) - Today's unanimous decision by the UN Security Council to add a further 900 peacekeepers to the UN mission in the Central African Republic (CAR) was welcomed by a group of 16 non-governmental organisations including Aegis Trust, the Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, Mercy Corps, and Invisible Children.

The situation in the country has been worsening in recent months, with fighting between rival militias forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes, and rendering 2.4m in need of humanitarian assistance.

Country Priorities

In Rwanda, ACORD’s overarching goal is to engage communities in the construction of a just and equitable society where people coexist in peace and dignity, and become responsible for their own development. The objective is to strengthen the livelihoods of the rural population, in particular marginalised and vulnerable groups, and their capacity in achieving inclusive and sustainable livelihoods through resilient ecosystems, productive employment, and entrepreneurship.

Country Priorities

ACORD in Uganda works in partnership with the poor and the marginalised to change conditions undermining social justice through participatory people-centred practical work, research and advocacy. To this end ACORD is implementing programmes focusing on resilient livelihoods, rights and responsibilities promotion, and peace building and conflict resolution. ACORD also provide life-saving support to Burundian, Congolese, and South Sudanese refugees in Uganda.

Uganda is facing the fastest growing refugee crisis in the world. According to recent data from the UN Refugee Agency, there are currently 950,562 South Sudanese refugees in Uganda, with an estimated 42,000 new arrivals every month, at up to 2000 people per day. 80% of the refugees arriving in Uganda are women and children.

Uganda receives an average of 42,000 new refugees every month. Amongst their most urgent needs is access to clean water and sanitation. This is critically important for their health and survival.

ACORD in collaboration with HEKS and the Swiss Solidarity Fund has initiated a water and sanitation project to address the increasing demand from the refugee population in Bidibidi settlement, West Nile, Northern Uganda.

New report on BRICS investments in African agriculture

A major new report released by the Pan-African organization ACORD finds that Africa’s small holder farmers are not benefiting enough from the increasing Chinese, Brazilian and Indian investment in African agriculture. The technology being promoted in Africa – such as irrigation equipment and tractors - tends to be more suited to Chinese, Brazilian and Indian agribusiness interests than to Africa’s smallholder farmers.

Noura is a widow aged about sixty years and a mother of five children. She has lived in Bokoro for over ten years, but was unaware of the legal amenities available for women. She is the vice president of an association of poor women that ACORD has been supporting by providing training, awareness sessions and financial support. Noura was unaware of all that is the protection of women regardless of their identity. She integrated the listening center Bokoro and works much more with girls.

ACORD, with support from Swiss Inter-Church Aid (HEKS), mobilized communities to engage in fishing as a viable economic activity in the area.

Toko is one of the fishing groups in Mangala Payam of Terekeka County that has benefited from the support provided by ACORD. Toko and nine other fishing groups from the area were provided fishing gears and local canoes to facilitate their fishing activities. The groups also received technical training on modern fishing and fish preservation methods. The training is meant to ensure that their produce is competitive in Juba Market.

ACORD Rwanda’s strategy focuses on strengthening the livelihoods of vulnerable rural populations and their capacity to advocate for their rights and achieve food sovereignty. ACORD Rwanda puts gender equality and women’s economic empowerment at the centre of efforts to achieve sustainable development and food sovereignty.

With support from the Dutch Government’s FLOW programme, rural women have accessed land based economic opportunities increasing incomes and food security.

Tarapkwe Juliet is a member of Pakele Women’s Association (P.A.W.A.) in Ataabo, a parish in Pakele sub-county in Adjumani district. P.A.W.A was formed in 1997 with a membership of 30 women and was registered in both the sub-county and district in 2013. Their main activities are enhancing HIV awareness among community members; promoting moral behavior change especially among women; and environmental protection through raising tree seedlings. P.A.W.A was selected by ACORD under the DGF-funded project to reach out to the community members in Pakele sub-county through civic education.
