AUEOM Reports Generally Peaceful and Transparent Elections; Calls for Timely and Credible Management of Results
Addis Ababa, 13 October 2017: The Department of Political Affairs (DPA) of the African Union Commission (AUC) concluded a two-day joint consultative workshop between the AU and the United Nations Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) on human rights issues in Africa.
Addis Ababa, 10 October 2017. The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union, Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemns the attacks carried out on 9 October 2017 by elements of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) against the base of the United Nations Mission for the Stabilization in the Congo (MONUSCO) in Mamundioma, in the North Kivu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which caused the death of two peacekeepers and injured several others from the Tanzanian contingent.
The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union (AU), and the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS) have been following closely the socio-political developments in the Togolese Republic.
The three organizations take note in particular of the passage of the draft constitutional bill to amend relevant articles of the Togolese constitution. They observe that it is an important step in bringing Togo in conformity with democratic norms reflecting best practices in West Africa.

Addis Ababa, 29 September 2017: At the invitation of the Government and National Electoral Commission of Liberia, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), His Excellency Moussa Faki Mahamat, has approved the deployment of a Short-Term Election Observation Mission to Liberia to observe the country’s presidential and legislative elections scheduled for 10 October 2017.
Disasters in Sub-Saharan Africa often take a huge toll on vulnerable populations. Loss of life and livelihoods in the face of already existing challenges sets communities back many years leaving them at risk should another natural hazard occur.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat strongly condemns the attack perpetrated on 24 September 2017 against a convoy of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), in the Gao region, killing three peacekeepers and seriously injuring five others.
Addis Ababa, 22 September 2017: The African Union (AU) in partnership with the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU), Oxfam International, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the Institute for Peace and Security Studies (IPSS) organized a panel discussion on the theme, “Harnessing the Demographic Dividend: Meaningful Youth Inclusion in Peace-Building”, on the occasion of the International Day of Peace (Peace Day) 21 September 2017.

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Libya, Ghassan Salamé, hosted a meeting of the Quartet in New York on 21 September on margins of the United Nations General Assembly, following the high-level event on Libya convened by the Secretary-General of the United Nations on 20 September 2017. The Quartet, which brings together the United Nations (UN), the African Union (AU), the European Union (EU), and the League of Arab States (LAS), last met in Brussels on 23 May 2017.
