1 Overview

Localized excessive rain amounts related to 2017 Indian summer monsoon led to devastating flooding in some parts of northern and north eastern India as well as in parts of Nepal and Bangla Desh. The death toll rose to more than 2000 people. Torrential rain made buildings collapsing and left part of cities underwater. Furthermore, vast areas of land were flooded in the state of Uttar Pradesh, thousands of villages were submerged and flooding affected millions of people.

Following the devastating 7.8 magnitude Gorkha Earthquake on April 25th 2015 and its aftershocks, approximately 2.3 million people were displaced. Individuals in urban and rural areas of Nepal sought different shelter options from spontaneous tent camps close to their homes, to scattered unofficial shelter areas to designated official shelter sites. Displaced communities in shelter camps in urban and rural areas were differentially vulnerable and used different means to check-in with each other or connect with government and relief agencies to request help.

1 Seismological Information (and Aftershocks)

The earthquake occurred on Saturday April 25, 2015 at 11:56 local time (ca. 6.11 UTC) with moment magnitude 7.7-8.0 (preferred solution Mw7.8). The epicentral location: 28.15 N 84.71 E (roughly between Pokhara and Kathmandu) is densely populated and the earthquake had a hypocentral depth of 10-15km.

The earthquake on Apr 1 occurred in a region of historic seismic quiescence, the Northern Chile seismic gap. The initial location is placed near the northern end of the seismic gap. The last significant earthquakes occurred in 1877 (M 8.8). Since then the region was quiet and built up stress for the last 130 years. A recent increase in seismicity has occurred just before the Mw 8.2 event, including a Mw6.7 event and three Mw 6.2 events in March.
