Since gaining independence in 1962, Uganda has provided asylum to people fleeing war and persecution in neighboring countries, especially South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi. Uganda's progressive refugee policy grant refugees freedom of movement, the right to seek employment and establish businesses, and to access public services such as education, health care and justice. In refugee-hosting districts, services are integrated with government service delivery systems, whenever feasible.

The Ministry of Health would like to inform the general public that there is a confirmed case of Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) in the country. This followed laboratory tests conducted by the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI) which confirmed that one person had died of Marburg Virus Disease, a type of Viral Hemorrhagic Fevers (VHF) on 17th October 2017.

South western: During August at the start of the second season rainfall and planting season, below normal rainfall was received, but the rainfall trend picked up to above normal in September. Therefore, favourable conditions in districts of Kanungu, Kisoro, Kabale, Rukungiri and Ntungamo; and watch conditions in the districts along in the cattle corridor extending to the Western region.

Acholi: Conditions are close to average but remain under “watch” for most districts in the region due to poor rainfall during July except for Kitgum that is above average due to increased rainfall leading to favorable conditions in the district.

Cholera and other diarrheal diseases remain major causes of morbidity and mortality in developing countries and Uganda in particular. Cholera outbreak leads to loss of lives and economic loss to the Country. Each outbreak costs the Country over USD 4,300,000 to control in addition to travel and trade restrictions.

a) Introduction

Uganda is faced with frequent outbreaks of emerging diseases and high burden of other endemic conditions, including cholera, all of which require dedicated resources for their prevention and control.
However, like many developing countries, Uganda is resource constrained, has an inadequate health development budget, and limited access to life saving technologies implying that efficient and maximized use of the available resources is paramount.

Kampala - 08/08/2017 - The Ministry of Health wishes to inform the public that there is an active outbreak of measles in Kampala and Wakiso districts. According to surveillance and case finding reports, total of 67 cases have so far been identified and of these, seven have been confirmed by laboratory tests within the month of July. The most affected age group are children under 1 year. All the five division of Kampala, as well as several suburbs in Wakiso district are affected.

CONTEXT

Uganda has a long history of providing asylum, which dates back to the Second World War, when the country opened its doors to some 10,000 refugees from Poland. Since then, Uganda has maintained its borders open, providing sanctuary to people escaping conflicts and major political crises in neighbouring countries. By April-end 2017, Uganda was home to 1.25 million refugees, mainly from South Sudan.
