Bridgetown, Barbados, June 2, 2009 (CDERA) - "The prediction for an average hurricane season is no reason to become complacent and not prepare," cautioned Jeremy Collymore, Coordinator of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) at the Annual Press Conference, held today (June 2) at the CDERA Coordinating Unit (CU) in Barbados.

Compared to last year's predictions for a very active hurricane season, the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season is forecasted to have 11 named storms, 5 hurricanes and two (2) hurricanes reaching category 3 or above.

Bridgetown, Barbados, May 28, 2009 (CDERA) - Belize was struck by an earthquake this morning at 4.24 am (EDT) and an earthquake also occurred southeast of Dominica at 12.28 pm local time.

A magnitude-7.1 quake struck about 177miles off the east coast of Belomopan, Belize and 80 miles off Honduras. The epicicentre was located at 16.783°N, 86.165°W of Honduras and at a depth of only 6 (10km) miles. The quake was felt in Belize and there have been reports of six houses collapsing.

Bridgetown, Barbados, April 28, 2009 (CDERA) - The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency has been monitoring closely the swine influenza outbreak and precautionary measures being undertaken by governments in CDERA 16 Participating States. The regional leadership in this area is being provided by Caribbean Epidemiology Centre (CAREC) and the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO) who are in direct contact with the ministries of health officials.

EVENT: Continuous and heavy rainfall commenced in Guyana on December 12, 2008. This resulted in flooding in several communities in Region 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, particularly, those communities located on the Coastal Plain and along the, Abary, Mahaica, and Mahaicony rivers.

PROGNOSIS: The Hyrometeorological Division of the Ministry of Agriculture reported that tomorrow January 8, 2009 will be cloudy with occasional showers expected over most of Guyana. Wet conditions are expected during the remaining forecast period January 9-12, 2009 which could cause flooding in low lying areas.

Bridgetown, Barbados, 4:00 pm Friday December 19, 2008 (CDERA) - Guyana has been experiencing excessive rainfall since the beginning of December 2008. Region 3 (West Demerara/Essequibo Islands) and Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica) have been inundated by floodwaters. Widespread flooding has been reported in low-lying communities on the East Coast of Demerara with 8 - 14 inches of water settling on the land.

Tortola, BVI, November 13, 2008 (DDM) - Hurricane Paloma, the 16th named storm and the 8th hurricane for 2008, left the islands of Cayman Brac and Little Cayman with widespread damage as it passed on Saturday November 8th as a Category 3 hurricane. Ninety to 95 percent of homes, businesses, churches, and public buildings were damaged, some beyond repair.

THE EVENT

Rains associated with the passage of Tropical Depression 16 during the period October 15 -17, 2008 have resulted in widespread flooding across several districts in Belize. Flood waters have reportedly affected 97 villages and are expected to continuing rising in areas of the Belize, Cayo, Corozal and Orange Walk Districts well into the month of November.

The Cayo District has been significantly impacted and on October 22 was declared a Disaster Area by the Honorable Dean Barrow, Prime Minister of Belize.

Event:

Heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Depression 16 began affecting the southern areas of Belize from the evening of Wednesday October 15. The system is producing a lot of rainfall and this has resulted in flooding in number of the flood prone in the southern districts.

Prognosis

The system has moved inland over Central Guatemala and Western Nicaragua and is a remnant low which continues to weaken and dissipate.
