It is dawn in Peru, but Andres Medina has been awake for hours. He and his fellow Red Cross volunteers are gearing up for a busy day of delivering aid to people impacted by heavy floods. They know what’s needed, and where they’re going. They don’t know when they’ll sleep next; but sleep-they figure-can wait.

“That’s the way it is, the emergency does not follow working hours,” says Andres.

I looked up to find the face of a concerned woman with a young boy by her side. The woman explained that since the earthquake struck six months ago, her son appeared nervous and afraid, was having problems in school and no longer wanted to talk.

I gently inched closer to make contact with him, but his frightened expression restrained my first attempt.

Thousands of people suffered losses in Saturday's earthquake, recently upgraded to magnitude-8.1, considered a "great" quake - the most powerful, by the U.S. Geological Survey.
