Kosovo is located in the southern portion of Serbia, the former Yugoslavia. Kosovo, one of the poorest and most underdeveloped regions in Europe, is faced with serious political instability between the ruling Serbs and the majority population of ethnic Albanians. In 1990, Kosovo was stripped of its autonomous status and came under direct authority of Belgrade. The heightened political tension has had tremendous negative consequence severely affecting the people of Kosovo.
