At least 25,000 people are feared dead and tens of thousands injured after a magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck the southeastern Iranian province of Kerman in the early morning hours of Friday, December 26. The earthquake was centered on Bam, a city of approximately 100,000 people. According to Iranian government estimates, 90 percent of buildings were severely damaged or destroyed, and the United Nations estimates 70,000 people are homeless, some forced to sleep in the open in freezing temperatures. The earthquake has also disrupted water supply, power and communications.
