According to the New York Times, more than 1,400 Palestinians and 400 Israelis have lost their lives since renewed violence broke out in the region in September 2000. With casualties overwhelming the capacity of local medical centers, the greatest humanitarian need is for medical assistance for those wounded in the most recent clashes. Food is running out for many, and damage to the infrastructure has left large numbers of people without electricity or water.

Much of Southern Africa has experienced well-below average rainfall this season, causing crops to wither after a similarly poor production year in 2001-2002. The drought, exacerbated by depleted reserves and high maize prices, has already forced hundreds of thousands of people throughout the region to rely on food aid for survival. The food insecurity is most acute in Zambia, Malawi and Zimbabwe, although Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland are also affected.

On March 25 and 26, a series of earthquakes registering up to 6.0 on the Richter scale struck the Nahrin district of Baghlan province in the mountains of northeastern Afghanistan, killing between 1,800 and 5,000 people and injuring thousands more. Tens of thousands are without shelter. Initial damage estimates suggest the town of Nahrin, with a population of over 80,000 people, was almost 90 percent destroyed. Rescue efforts are underway, and humanitarian agencies are providing urgently needed shelter, medical care, and other emergency assistance.

At about 9:30 AM local time on January 17th, Nyiragongo, an 11,380-foot volcano situated 10 miles north of Goma, the largest town in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, erupted. Lava flows from the eruption advanced through the heart of the city and into nearby Lake Kivu. Damage estimates report about 20 percent of the city was destroyed, including much of the infrastructure and homes for approximately 80,000 people.
