Twenty US-based international humanitarian organizations on Nov. 27 expressed concern over the recent violent attacks against refugees along the West African border area separating Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia and called on US Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright to work with governments to increase security to allow "unhindered" assistance to refugees.

Floods triggered by monsoon rainfall have caused extensive damage in several Southeast Asian countries. Water levels of the Mekong river have risen in recent weeks, causing massive flooding in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, and Vietnam. This flooding may be the worst flooding in 35 years. Tens of thousands of families are displaced after their homes were flooded, and are now in need of food, water, and shelter. Crops are being destroyed and agricultural land lost to flood waters.

A sign-on letter calling for the US Administration to pressure Khartoum to stop the bombing against aid agencies and civilians in the South.
The letter is signed by 22 NGOs. InterAction is a coalition of 165 US NGOs that do overseas humanitarian aid and development work.

Western and southeastern India, particularly Gujarat, Rajashtan, and Andhra Pradesh, are facing a drought resulting from a lack of rain combined with environmental degradation. Crops have withered for the second consecutive season, and irrigation tanks and wells have gone dry. Reports of deaths resulting from the drought, including suicides of people who have lost their traditional livelihood, are beginning to surface.

The lack of rainfall in Ethiopia has created a persistent drought causing widespread famine, particularly in the hardest hit regions of the Ogaden and Somali. An estimated 8 million people in Ethiopia alone may be affected.Experts indicate that humanitarian assistance must reach affected people before summer weather changes in July, to prevent further starvation.
