Virtually no rain has fallen in Central America during the summer months. According to the U.N. World Food Program, food stocks are running low across drought-hit countries in Central America, leaving some 700,000 of the 1.5 million people affected in urgent need of food aid. The drought has resulted in crop losses in northern Nicaragua, southern, central, and western Honduras, central and eastern Guatemala, and the eastern part of El Salvador. The situation is most serious in Honduras and Nicaragua.

On January 13, an earthquake of magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter Scale struck off the El Salvadoran coastline, 65 miles southwest of San Miguel, causing nearly 200 landslides. More than 1,950 aftershocks have been recorded since January 13. Usulutan suffered the most extensive damage; San Miguel, La Paz, and La Libertad were also significantly affected. The earthquake caused over 800 deaths and over 4,500 injuries. 92,000 homes have been destroyed and another 130,000 damaged. More than 1200 schools were destroyed or damaged, along with 30,000 farm properties.
