Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo provides € 5,5 million extra humanitarian aid for Yemen. Minister De Croo takes this decision following the demand from UN emergency aid coordinator Mark Lowcock in the UN Security Council in New York yesterday. He called for a humanitarian truce and additional humanitarian aid for the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo reaffirms Belgium’s support for the humanitarian response in the lake Chad Basin. In the margins of the High Level Conference on the Lake Chad Region in Berlin, the Minister notes that Belgium invests more than 9 million EUR in humanitarian aid this year for the region, where more than 11 million people need aid to survive.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo has decided to grant an additional € 4 million in humanitarian aid to UNRWA, the UN agency responsible for distributing humanitarian aid to more than 5 million Palestinian refugees in the Middle East. This new support brings Belgian aid to the UNRWA to more than € 11 million this year. With this support, Belgium wants UNRWA schools to reopen their doors to more than half a million Palestinian children after the summer holidays.

Notre pays entend ainsi donner un signal à la communauté internationale et à nouveau témoigner sa solidarité à la population congolaise. La Belgique invite aussi les autres pays à accroître leur efforts.

In a conversation today with ICRC President Peter Maurer, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo announced the doubling of Belgium’s contribution to the International Committee of the Red Cross. Over the course of the next three years, Belgium will contribute a total of 25,5 million euros to the overall operations of the ICRC. Additional funds will be allocated for specific conflict areas.

The Belgian government takes note of the announcement by the Congolese authorities of measures concerning the Belgian development agency Enabel as well as the Schengen house in Kinshasa.

Belgium regrets this announcement which threatens to prevent the Enabel agency to operate directly and significantly in favour of the Congolese population, mostly in the sectors of agriculture, public health and education. This decision would also affect hundreds of the agency’s Congolese staff.

In response to the call of UNRWA's Commissioner-General, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Development Cooperation Alexander De Croo has decided to allocate 19 million EURO over the next 3 years to UNRWA, the United Nations agency which provides humanitarian help to Palestinian refugees. Belgium is one of the few donors that provides this kind of multi-annual funding.

This fund is managed by the Start Network, an international network of humanitarian NGO’s. The Start Fund’s objective is to reduce the funding gap within the current humanitarian system for small to medium-sized humanitarian crises.
