In September 2018, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) recorded 1,849 deaths and injuries from 256 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 58% (1,066) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

When explosive violence was used in populated areas, 89% of all casualties were civilians, compared to 16% in other areas.

In August 2018, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) recorded 2,070 deaths and injuries from 264 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 61% (1,269) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

When explosive violence was used in populated areas, 90% of all casualties were civilians, compared to 20% in other areas.

Today, August 15th 2018, a suicide bomber targeted a tuition centre as teaching was under way in Afghanistan’s capital, Kabul. The attack left at least 48 dead and a further 67 injured.

Many amongst the casualties are thought to be teenagers getting extra tuition as they prepare for university entrance exams.

The centre is located in a mostly Shia Muslim neighbourhood of the capital.

On Thursday, August 9th 2018, a Saudi-led coalition airstrike hit a school bus near a market in Dahyan city in the Houthi-controlled province of Saada, Yemen. At least 29 children were killed in the airstrike and a further 30 children wounded.

In July 2018, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) recorded 3,151 deaths and injuries from 279 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 75% (2,362) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

When explosive violence was used in populated areas, 86% of all casualties were civilians, compared to 31% in other areas.

On Friday, August 3rd 2018, a suicide attack on a Shia mosque in Gardez city, in Afghanistan’s Paktia province, left at least 48 dead and over 70 injured.

Two suicide bombers, said to be disguised in burkas, carried out the attack which has been claimed by ISISthrough their Amaq news agency.

On Thursday, August 2nd 2018, Saudi-led coalition airstrikes hit a busy fish market and outside the entrance to al-Thawra hospital in Hudaydah, Yemen. At least 28 were killed in the airstrikes and a further 70 were injured.

Today, July 31st 2018, a roadside bomb hit a passenger bus in Bala Buluk district of Farah province, Afghanistan, killing at least 11 and injuring a further 31. All the casualties are reported to be civilians, with women and children amongst them.

The bus had been travelling from Herat province towards Kabul.

Today, July 25th 2018, a suicide bombing outside a polling station in Quetta, Pakistan, killed 31 and left more than 30 injured. Both police and civilians are amongst the dead and wounded. Eight of the injured were reported to be in a critical condition.

The bomber had attempted to enter the polling station but when prevented by police he detonated the explosives outside.

On Sunday, July 22nd 2018, a suicide bomber targeted crowds that had gathered at Kabul airport to welcome home Afghanistan’s Vice President, Abdul Rashid Dostum, from exile. The blast left 23 dead and at least 107 injured.

The Vice President, travelling in an armoured car, escaped harm.

In the first half of 2018, Action on Armed Violence recorded 2,002 civilian casualties from explosive violence in Afghanistan, compared to the 1,581 civilian casualties recorded in the same period last year – an increase of 27%.

From January to the end of June 2018, the main cause of civilian casualties from explosive violence in Afghanistan continues to be improvised explosive devices (IEDs), responsible for 83% of all civilian casualties.

Late Tuesday, July 17th 2018, Syrian government forces began a bombing campaign that lasted through the following day on the densely-populated rebel-held town of Nawa and surrounding villages in Daraa governorate. The bombing left at least 14 dead and 150 injured.

The airstrikes also hit the town’s only hospital, putting it out of action and causing many casualties. An orthopaedist, one of the town’s last, was killed in the bombing campaign.

With only one ambulance, civilians relied on cars to move the casualties.

Action Contre la Violence Armée (ACVA) publie les résultats de ses observations de l’année 2017 sur le danger des violences armées. L’année dernière, ACVA a décompté 42.972 morts et blessés, dûs à l’utilisation d’armes explosives à travers le monde, comme rapporté par les médias anglophones.

Cela inclut le plus grand nombre de morts civils depuis que ACVA a commencé son travail de comptage en 2011 -16,289 victimes-, une augmentation de 38 % comparé à l’année précédente et une augmentation de 165 % comparé à 2011.

On Thursday, June 21st 2018, a twin bomb attack in Syria’s north-western city of Idlib killed at least five civilians and injured 35.

It was reported that the explosions were caused by a car bomb near the city’s western entrance and a bomb-laden motorcycle in the same area.

Nearby buildings also saw severe damage in the blasts.

On Sunday, June 17th 2018, a suicide attack left 18 killed and 49 wounded when a bomb detonated near the regional governor’s office in Jalalabad city, Nangarhar, Afghanistan.

In May 2018, Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) recorded 2,247 deaths and injuries from 287 incidents of explosive violence around the world, as reported in English-language media. Civilians accounted for 69% (1,544) of the deaths and injuries recorded.

When explosive violence was used in populated areas, 90% of all casualties were civilians, compared to 20% in other areas.

Last month saw the lowest levels of casualties from explosive violence since December 2012. This is mostly due to the significant decrease in casualties from airstrikes in Syria in May.
