16.03.2015 - The UPU is participating in the World Conference on Disaster Risk Management, currently taking place in Japan, to stress the postal sector’s capacity in reinforcing communities’ resilience to natural disasters.

UPU Deputy Director General Pascal Clivaz attended a high-level meeting chaired by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on opening day, Saturday 14 March. Different UN organizations reflected on the main challenges in achieving the goals and priorities that will be adopted in Sendai.

04.03.2015 - Stakeholders in the remittance market from across Africa are in Cape Town, South Africa, to discuss how to leverage money transfers through the postal network and make them more affordable and accessible to rural people.

About 100 delegates from postal operators and banks, regulatory authorities, governments, the private sector, international organizations and civil society are attending the first African Conference on Remittances and Postal Networks, a two-day event hosted by the International Fund for Agricultural development (IFAD).

After 23 years with no postal services, Somalia could soon start receiving mail again, thanks to talks facilitated by the Universal Postal Union.

Under a memorandum of understanding, the parties committed to negotiating the details of an agreement that would see Dubai act as a hub for handling mail destined for Somalia in future.

Abdullahi E. Hersi, Somali minister of information, posts, telecommunication and transports, and Emirates Post president, Fahad al Hosani, signed the memorandum on April 22 with the UPU director general, Bishar A. Hussein, present.

19.04.2013 - Japan is lending its support to the UPU in establishing a global disaster risk reduction and management policy for the postal sector.

Shigeki Suzuki, director general of the postal services policy department at the Japanese ministry of internal affairs and communications, and UPU Director General Bishar A. Hussein today signed a cooperation agreement on this matter.

The agreement comes with a voluntary contribution of some 350,000 Swiss francs for disaster reduction projects and building postal sector resilience.

THE HAITIAN POST TODAY

- At the time of the earthquake, the Haitian Post (Office des postes d'Haïti) managed about 60 offices nationwide, nine of which were in Port-au-Prince and its suburbs. The Post employs about 600 people nationwide, 350 of whom are in the capital.

- The January 12 earthquake destroyed two post offices in Port-au-Prince, the capital's main post office and the building housing the EMS service, the Post's express service.

Six months after the earthquake, Haiti Post picks up pace as its new mail processing centre opens in the capital.

The new postal installation was built as part of an emergency aid project managed by the UPU and developed with the generous assistance of the United Nations agency's member countries. About 60 employees work at the 600-square metre mail processing centre, where they handle letter-post items, parcels and EMS items (Express Mail Service), the Post's fastest service.

Les échanges de courrier entre Haïti et les Etats-Unis et la France ont recommencé aujourd'hui avec la reprise officielle des activités de courrier international au centre de traitement provisoire de Delmas, un faubourg de Port-au-Prince.

Les premiers chargements de courrier en provenance des Etats-Unis et de la France arriveront bientôt en Haïti. L'Union postale universelle a informé ces deux pays qu'ils pouvaient débloquer le courrier retenu depuis le tremblement de terre du 12 janvier pour l'envoyer à Port-au-Prince, o=F9 il sera traité et distribué depuis Delmas.
