I. HIGHLIGHTS / KEY PRIORITIES

  • Since the start of the rainfall season in November 2013, 7,344 households have been affected by rainstorms in 17 districts, of which 1,525 households were affected by floods in Mangochi district.

  • Malawi also experienced an outbreak of armyworms which affected 2,601 ha of crop fields in 14 districts, of which a total of 547 ha in Blantyre and Machinga were the most affected.

  • The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Report of June 2013 projects the food insecure population to be 1,461,940 in 21 districts. These people are reported to be having missing food entitlements for a range of 3 to 5 months from October onwards.

I. HIGHLIGHTS / KEY PRIORITIES

• Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) Report indicated that 1, 6 million people may be at risk of food insecurity in the next 3 to 8 months. The MVAC will however be conducting its assessment in October whose purpose is to update the findings of the initial findings. It is expected that this assessment will take into account the production from winter production.

  1. Situation Overview

The Malawi Vulnerability Assessment Committee (MVAC) annual report indicates that Malawi will for the consumption season 2012/13 will have a total of 1,630,007 people that may be at risk of food insecurity. This represents about 11 % of the population. The projected numbers of people at risk of food insecurity are in 15 districts as follows: Balaka, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Dedza, Machinga, Mangochi, Mulanje, Mwanza, Neno, Ntcheu, Nsanje Phalombe, Salima, Thyolo and Zomba.
