Activities & General Updates

  • Am. Samoa have not seen any ZIKV PCR positive cases since June 2016. From Aug 19 – Aug25, Hawaii State Lab (HSL) released results for 3 samples tested via ZIKA IgM MAC ELISA, 1 was tested positive. Positive serology tests (IgM) for Zika was discussed and has been agreed to monitor PCR positive results.

  • Am. Samoa continue to see a decline in the ratio of samples that test positive for Dengue Virus infection. For Epi Weeks 34, HSL release results for 14 samples tested via RT-PCR, with 2 positive cases.

  • Am. Samoa have not seen any ZIKV PCR positive cases since June 2016. From Aug 1 – Aug, Hawaii State Lab released results for 81 samples tested via ZIKA IgM MAC ELISA, 13 were tested positive. Positive serology tests (IgM) for Zika was discussed and has been agreed to monitor PCR positive results.

  • Am. Samoa continue to see a decline in the ratio of samples that test positive for Dengue Virus infection.

For Epi Weeks 30 to 32, there was an average of 3 positive Dengue cases per week.

  • Am. Samoa have not seen any ZIKV PCR positive cases since June 2016. From June 10 - 24, Hawaii State Lab released results for 81 samples tested via ZIKA IgM MAC ELISA, 10 were tested positive.
    Positive serology tests (IgM) for Zika was discussed and has been agreed to monitor PCR positive results.

  • Am. Samoa continue to see a decline in the ratio of samples that test positive for Dengue Virus infection.

• Dengue outbreak has been going on for 1 year (March 2017 – Present), 40 samples are sent to Hawaii State Lab weekly for confirmatory PCR testing for Zika, Dengue, Chikungunya.

StarKist Samoa made a donation of $50,000 to the American Samoa Government (ASG) to help in the Hurricane Gita relief efforts. Accepting the donation on behalf of ASG was Governor Lolo Moliga, Lt. Governor Lemanu Peleti Mauga and several Cabinet members.

Outbreak Overview

On March 15, 2016 Kosrae State was notified of its first confirmed case of Zika. Since Feb 2016 there have been 12 confirmed cases and 11 probable cases of Zika disease in Kosrae.

-Onset dates of first 3 confirmed (PCR+) cases: 02/23/2016, 03/17/2016, 3/19/2016. Ages (and sex): 49 (F), 8 (F), 37 (F). None with a travel history.

-75 other suspect cases identified since enhanced Zika surveillance began on 02/10/2016 when Marshall Islands reported a confirmed case.

Outbreak Overview

ZIKA virus (ZIKV) has been reported in Samoa since 2015 by ILM Laboratory. Since then no further positive ZIKV tests were reported from there, including samples sent in 2016. Meanwhile, ESR Lab in NZ has confirmed ZIKV cases in Samoa from February 2016.
