Jammu & Kashmir has been hit by one of the worst floods in decades due to incessant rain which has triggered landslides and submerging hundreds of villages. Due to the non-stop downpour in J & K, atleast 175 people dead and causing extensive damage to thousands of people lives, livestock, water supply, livelihood, telecommunications and road accessibility hampering relief & rescue operations.

The erratic weather conditions have been attributed to early monsoons in Northern India due to which early warnings were not provided and people have been affected adversely. River Ganges and its major tributaries of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi have swelled up, causing widespread destruction downstream. Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh, has received the highest rainfall in 20 years over the last three days.

According to the latest government reports, 193 people have perished and more than 65 are still missing in the Leh flash floods that occurred on the night of 5th August, 2010. Lifeline infrastructure was destroyed including hospitals, bus terminals, radio station transmitter, telephone exchange and mobile-phone towers bringing life to standstill in Leh. 24 villages in Leh region have been severely affected. Initially the rescue efforts were hampered by gushing water and mud but now movement of goods and people is coming back to normalcy.

Aidmatrix is an international charity that provides technology systems that accelerate the process and delivery of humanitarian aid for relief organisations.

An update information of flood situation in Coastal India:

The floods triggered by heavy rains under the influence of a deep depression in the Bay of Bengal has affected 6 states - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Orissa. It has destroyed standing crops, civic infrastructure, electricity and telecom facilities and paralysed road and rail transport.

In Orissa, incessant rain across the state has caused flash floods in Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts. This has affected more than 60,000 people in 103 villages.
