Malawi has profoundly thanked Zambia for rendering financial and material assistance towards easing the devastation caused by floods in that country in the past few weeks.

Malawi President Peter Mutharika said his country was deeply indebted to the Zambia government for rendering financial assistance and tents to help people that were affected by floods.Professor Mutharika said this yesterday when he and President Edgar Lungu held bilateral talks in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia where they are both attending the 24th African Union summit.

Minister of Local Government and Housing, Hon. Emmanuel Chenda, MP recently commissioned the K5 million Pemba Water Supply Project which was wholly funded by the Government through the Ministry. Hon. Chenda said the scope of work includes the construction of a new surface water abstraction facility and a new water treatment plant; and rehabilitation of the existing old and dilapidated water supply network and the repairing of all leaking water tanks to reduce water losses.

MINISTER of Home Affairs Edgar Lungu has assured a visiting Rwandan delegation of Government’s support in discussing possible ways of persuading Rwandans in Zambia to return home.

And Mr Lungu said there is need to establish permanent missions in Lusaka and Kigali to strengthen co-operation between the two countries.

He said Government will co-operate with the delegation because it is important for Rwandans in Zambia who are willing to return home for them to assist in developing their country.

THE United Nations (UN) system in Zambia has given Government K28.5 billion for the implementation of the anti-Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Act and promotion of human rights. Human rights and governance programmes have been allocated K16 billion while anti-GBV programmes have received K12.5 billion.

Secretary to the Treasury Fredson Yamba and UN resident co-ordinator Kanni Wignaraja signed the agreements in Lusaka yesterday. Ms Wignaraja said in an interview after signing the agreements that reports of GBV, especially against women in Zambia, are alarming.
