Bishkek (19 August 2010) - As part of a jointly run "Food for Work" project, by WFP and UNDP, the village of An-Aryk, in the oblast of Chuy, Northern Kyrgyzstan, today successfully completed the distribution of a 23 MT consignment of wheat flour and around 2 MT of vegetable oil.

The village project has provided the incentive to get together a community, with a view to regenerate part of its public infrastructure, which would otherwise have been left abandoned and in ruins.

Bishkek (21 July 2010) -- The first of two rounds of national immunization days (NIDs) against poliomyelitis (polio) in Kyrgyzstan were launched on Monday, 19 July. The launch ceremony was held in an outpatient clinic in the capital, Bishkek, with the participation of Dr Sabirjan Abdikarimov, the acting Minister of Health of Kyrgyzstan, and representatives of WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).

Kyrgyzstan has reported over 90% coverage with three doses of oral polio vaccine (OPV) each year.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, (8 July 2010) - The Republican Scientific-Research Centre for Trauma and Orthopaedics in Bishkek, has received a donation of Swiss-made orthopaedic equipment, following an appeal by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The orthopaedic equipment, with a net value of 140,000 USD, was donated by WHO, and handed over by the WHO Country Office in Kyrgyzstan on 8 July 2010.

BISHKEK (16 June 2010) -- UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund, has sent humanitarian assistance for more than one million soms to people in Osh and Jalalabad. Humanitarian assistance will be sent to medical and non-governmental organizations in Osh and Jalalabad for further distribution.

The humanitarian shipment contains medical supplies, hygiene and detergent products and clothes for adults and babies.

Currently UNFPA is mobilizing additional humanitarian assistance from abroad for more than three million soms.

The humanitarian shipment is planned to arrive next week.

Bishkek (13 June 2010) -- The United Nations in Kyrgyzstan is shocked and alarmed about the violence that has been taking place in southern Kyrgyzstan since 10 June. We express our condolences to the victims and their families, and appeal to all sides to immediately stop all violence and ensure the protection of civilians throughout the country.

There are reports of continued targeted and indiscriminate attacks resulting in deaths, injuries, displacement, destruction of property, and other crimes which have been committed against women and children.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (9 March 2010) - Today, the First Vice Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic Mr. Akylbek Japarov and the UN Resident Coordinator Mr. Neal Walker announced the Launch of the One UN Programme in Kyrgyzstan.

Funding of a total USD 3.6 million was committed for the implementation of the One UN Programme in Kyrgyzstan in 2010. This sum represents core UN funding granted to the UN system in Kyrgyzstan to be allocated to projects determined jointly between the United Nations and the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic through the Joint Steering Committee.

Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (November 16, 2009) - On November 18-19, representatives of governments, donors, international and non-governmental organizations will gather in Bishkek to discuss past achievements and future challenges in disaster risk reduction. It is the second regional conference organized initiated by the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO) and the Kyrgyz Republic Ministry of Emergency Situations.

BISHKEK - On 21 September, in a short ceremony with refugees, H.E. Ambassador Holger Green of Germany awarded scholarships to refugee students. With the Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) the German Government funds scholarships to refugee students in many countries world-wide, including the Kyrgyz Republic.

Thanks to this scholarship, Afghan refugee Yalda A., one of the two new recipients, will now be able to study International Relations at the International University of Kyrgyzstan. "My brothers had promised to support me," she explained.
