The deadly attack on a mosque in North Sinai, Egypt, on 24 November killed more than 300 people and injured many more. It has also devastated hundreds of grieving women and children who face an uncertain future without the family breadwinner.
When the attack happened, the Egyptian Red Crescent Society (ERC), immediately rushed to the scene and deployed emergency response, medical and psychosocial support teams from Areesh, Ismaileya and Cairo to provide first aid and support medical teams in nearby hospitals.
Cairo (ICRC), 7 February 2017 – Catherine Gendre, Head of Cairo Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and Moamena Kamel, Secretary General of the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), signed five project agreements yesterday for the year 2017.
“The signing of the agreements is a continuation of the fruitful cooperation with the ERC in areas concerning providing humanitarian aid to the victims of violence and emergency situations, and in promoting the International Humanitarian Law (IHL),” said Catherine Gendre.
Within the pioneering humanitarian role of the Egyptian Red Crescent and its rapid response in disasters and crises to help and rescue the affected people, Sohag ERC National Disaster Response Team and Emergency Action Team headed on Saturday 29 Oct. to hager abou leila village,saqultah, Sohag governorate which was affected by the floods resulted in collapsing a large number of houses and many families became homeless. ERC volunteers provided first aid to the injured and helped those who got affected with 1000 blankets and 500 mat as an urgent aid.
The Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah, in collaboration with the Egyptian Red Crescent, sent 8800 cartons of foodstuffs to Libyan on Tuesday, 5th of April, 2016. The aforesaid in-kind aid was loaded on eight trucks and sent through Saloom outlet where the Libyan Red Crescent received them.

Prof. Moamena Kamel, ERC Secretary General declared that the subject of disaster risk reduction receives increasing attention on the international level. Building Nations and societies capabilities to face disasters aims at the integration of such capabilities building with permanent development policies. She focused on the fact that the international community adopted many agreements and international work structures in this respect. The most recent of which is the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015 - 2030.
ERC in cooperation with the Islamic Development bank and North Saini Governorate distributed 90 tons of flour to the Egyptian citizens who were transferred from Rafah border to Al Arish and neighboring villages to fulfill their needs from this essential elements. Prof.
During the official opening of the disasters and crisis management in Egypt workshop, Prof. Moamena kamel , the ERC Secretary General stated that the MENA region became now one of the most vulnerable regions because of the climate changes , assuring that the big industrial countries have to take their responsibilities towards the developing courtiers in case of any natural disaster due to climate changes, specially that the industrial countries are responsible - for a great extent- for these changes due to the huge heat emission resulting from their industries.
In response to the torrential rains hitting several governorates in Egypt, the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) deployed the National Disaster Response Teams (NDRT) on spot to the most affected governorates.
In Ismailia, 120 families affected were approached by ERC in the most affected villages: alsab’a – Abar Sharfeya, Al-Mahsana and Al-wasfeya. The ERC National Disaster Response Teams distributed 150 food parcels, 240 Kg of meat and 240 blankets. The teams also visited the affected families to provide psychological support.
Emergency alert was announced in ERC headquarters and its branches in conjunction with the floods those attacked Alexandria and Behera on Wednesday, 4th of November 2015.
Ghada Wali, Minister of Social Solidarity and vice president of Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), requested ERC to send immediately 4000 tons of medicines and medical supplies by air to the Yemenis, who are stranded in Djibouti as well as to the Yemenis in Aden.
These recommendations came during a meeting yesterday with Prof. Moamena Kamel Secretary General of ERC.
Wali also requested ERC to offer humanitarian aids for the Yemenis in Egypt especially to who came to have medical treatments and the Yemenis studies in the Egyptian universities.
The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) in cooperation with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) started offering a humanitarian assistance to the Yemenis in Egypt. This assistance was distributing coupons to purchase foods and non-foods items.
During two days, more than 200 families got these coupons, especially Yemeni who suffers from chronic diseases such as cancer, renal failure, diabetes and others.
Egyptian Red Crescent in cooperation with Islamic development Bank and North Sinai Governorate, distributes 50 tons of flour to the Egyptians, who has been transferred from Rafah border to Arish and neighboring villages.
"This humanitarian aids as part of the program offered by the Islamic development Bank. This program started with distributing of 95 tons last week." said Prof. Moamena Kamel, Secretary General of Egyptian Red Crescent.
In the partnership framework with other Organizations, the Egyptian Red Crescent is extending the agreement with UNRWA concerning provision of health and medical care for Palestinians coming from Syria. The agreement will expire at the end of 2015.
It is worth mentioning that this agreement was signed in June 2014 and was planed to end in June 2015. This meeting attended by Prof. Moamena Kamel, Secretary General of Egyptian Red Crescent, Michael Schoiswohl representative regional office of UNRWA in Middle East.
For 3 days, the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) hosted 38 children from Community Center for Children in Giza, which belongs to Save the Children, to attend Health and Safety training course. ERC organizes this training course in cooperation with Save the Children. 38 children are refugees from Sudan, Somali, Palestine and Morocco.
In cooperation with Islamic Development Bank, and North Sinai Governorate, the Egyptian Red Crescent distributed 95 tons of humanitarian aids includes food items, non-food items, medical supplies and medicine to the Egyptians who has been transferred from Rafah border to Arish and neighboring villages to cover their essential needs. "These humanitarian aids were provided by the Islamic Development Bank in Jeddah included 40 tons of foods, 20 tons of mattress, blankets and pillows as well as 15 tons of medical supplies to cover the needs of Arish Hospital" said Prof.
The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) facilitated on February 23, 2015 the entry of humanitarian aid donated by the Islamic Development Bank (IDB) to Libya after the escalation of violence. ERC in cooperation with IDB prepared aid (relief items, foods, medical supplies and medicines) to 5000 Libyan families at Benghazi and Warishvana cities according to their needs.
The Egyptian Red Crescent held from February 2 to 5, 2015 "Health and Safety" workshop to Syrian children at the request of "Save the Children" organization.
Sixty Syrian children were trained on the basics of "first aid", "road safety", "hygiene and healthy life styles", "climate change" and "emergency response" to raise their health awareness and ability to respond to emergency situations.
The Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) sent on December 6, 2014 Humanitarian aid to Sudan to alleviate the suffering of families affected by the floods that hit the country in July and August 2014.
The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) will receive the aid through Port Sudan seaport, which included 60 tents and tons of food.
In response to the appeal of 40 stranded people at the Egyptian- Libyan border, the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) conducted a rapid assessment to the situation and to know their urgent needs.
ERC provided to the stranded people from (Chad, Sudan, and Somalia) humanitarian materials included non-food items (blankets, mattresses and spread sheets) as well as food materials, infant milk and detergents materials on November 16, 2014.
