In the midst of the daunting peace and security challenges in parts of Eastern Congo, the UN Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) has supported stabilization efforts through two projects in Kalehe (South Kivu) and Mambasa (Ituri) since 2015. Initial results are promising and have paved the way for a second phase as well as for three more stabilization packages to be launched in the East through the multi-donor Stabilization Coherence Trust Fund.

Since the Peacebuilding Fund’s Stakeholders meeting at the end of June, the Fund has made new commitments in Somalia, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guinea-Bissau, Sri Lanka, Niger and Myanmar amounting to $37.7 million. This programming includes $12 million to help catalyze the DRC’s Trust Fund for stabilization in the east – including $4 million in an innovative matching allocation to spur bilateral contributions.

NEW YORK, 30 November — Member States of the United Nations reiterated the importance of the UN Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) during the Fund’s high-level stakeholders meeting held on 29 November, and pledged further support.

At the meeting, a total of US$77 million in contributions were confirmed for 2012, marking the highest annual level since 2008. More donors made multi-year contributions than ever before, while others indicated that their contributions were going to be regularly repeated year on year.

UNPFN was established as a complementary instrument to the government run Nepal Peace Trust Fund (NPTF) in March 2007 to mobilize UN agency support to the implementation of the peace process. The Fund focussed only on tasks that cannot be funded or implemented through existing mechanisms. Initially operating under the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) and answering to the immediate needs of the peace process, the UNPFN was transferred at the beginning of 2009 to the office of UN RC/HC.

NEW YORK, 29 November— The Secretary General’s Peacebuilding Fund (PBF) held its second high-level stakeholders meeting in New York, where the Member States of the United Nations endorsed the importance of the PBF as an innovative, fast and catalytic instrument to support countries emerging from conflict.
