Families affected by the major flooding on 6 August began receiving assistance from the advance payment fund that was set up to help them until damage can be assessed. More than 2.000 people from Skopje and Tetovo are eligible to collect a 500 EUR advance payment after they have submitted their contact details to the Finance Ministry.

"Payments will continue in the coming period, according to the information that are being delivered to the Commission set up to estimate damages", said Finance Minister Kiril Minoski.

The majority of streets and houses in the village of Stajkovci have been cleaned. More than 85% of the houses have been disinfected. The citizens, whose homes and properties have been flooded and damaged by the freak storm that hit the Skopje region on Aug. 6, are expected soon to start receiving compensation for their damages.

The Government decided to provide advance payment of damages to citizens affected by floods in the Skopje region, said Prime Minister Emil Dimitriev during Thursday's visit to flooded houses in Ilinden municipality.

EUR 1,5 million will be allocated for this purpose.

"Evaluation teams are currently on the field in order to determine the extent of damages", added Dimitriev.

PM Dimitriev was accompanied by Minister of Transport and Communications Vlado Misajlovski and Ilinden Mayor Zika Stojanovski.

Assistance to tackle the consequences of the storm that hit the region of Skopje and Tetovo over the weekend has been offered to the Republic of Macedonia by many countries. Several countries in the region, including the neighboring Albania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Kosovo as well as Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey and Croatia, were the first ones to offer their assistance.

“At the moment, the Republic of Macedonia is defining its needs to address the emergency situation before officially asking for international assistance,” the MoFA said Monday.

The government has paid Tuesday subsidies amounting to Denar 29.9 million as compensation for damages to 394 persons that were hit by storms and floods in early 2015.

Finance Ministry told that Denar 527.000 are paid to citizens of Gradsko and 489.000 to citizens of Cesinovo-Oblesevo.

So far, Denar 144.24 million were paid to 2.218 persons in hit-flooded regions of Mogila, Novaci, Demir Hisar, Bitola, Bosilovo, Krivogastani, Veles, Probistip and Stip.

On Monday Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski, within his visit to Tetovo region, met with residents of Dobroste village and oversaw the construction works for repairing the damages caused by recent floods.

State institutions will remain engaged in the upcoming period until full recovery of the flood-affected regions, Gruevski told the villagers. Dobroste residents extended gratitude to the Prime Minister on his engagement in granting flood relief, as well as to the Government and all relevant institutions for their fast response to the natural disaster.

The Government's temporary measures related to inflow of migrants are aimed to provide for their more efficient transit through Macedonia, Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski told reporters on Thursday.

The Government said today it decided to declare the border regions of Gevgelija in the south and Kumanovo in the north as crisis regions due to unprecedented inflow of refugees from the Middle East, pouring in Macedonia from Greece.

Macedonian is a transit route of migrants and it is very important how the country will deal with this challenge, Gruevski said.

Macedonia's Government has decided Tuesday to grant a financial assistance of MKD 30.000 (about EUR 500) to families that suffered most serious damages from yesterday's floods in Tetovo.

It has also decided for a special commission to be set up to assess the damage of properties on the ground.

The Government has allocated EUR 22 million for citizens who had suffered damages during the spring floods, EUR 12 million of which for property compensation, while EUR 10 million for overhaul of damaged infrastructure, said Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski during Saturday's visit to Bitola and Novaci.

"The compensation for Novaci citizens who had suffered damages to their crops and homes, was launched today. All funds are to be paid over the next couple of days", said PM Gruevski.

Macedonia is sending rescue, medical teams, water pumps, power generators, boats, blankets and medicines in aid to flooded areas in Serbia and Bosnia/Herzegovina.

Macedonia's Government made a decision Friday on the scope of the aid as an initial response to the appeal of the two countries for aid, conveyed by the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

The Protection and Rescue Directorate prepared Saturday the aid package, which is to be sent in the most endangered parts of Serbia and Bosnia.

The Government will help in repair the damages of houses and other property caused by the earthquake that hit Ohrid region on Thursday, Deputy PM and Finance Minister Zoran Stavreski said on Saturday.

After the visit to the village of Belcista together with Interior Minister Gordana Jankuloska, said that commission formed by the municipality will come out on the terrain to assess the earthquake damages. He said that based on the assessment, the government commission will convene and will assess the total costs and we will provide the funds from the budget, Stavreski said.

Financial assistance in amount of 100.000 US dollars will be sent by the Government of Macedonia for the victims of Haiti's devastating earthquake.

Government spokesman Martin Martinoski told reporters that in addition to this decision, the Government has also decided to offer medical team to join international medical crews that are currently operating there. As a result, the Ministry of Health is in charge to contact international organisations, such as the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders, etc, to offer the assistance.

The Government has mobilized all forces within the state in the fire extinguishing operations. All domestic capacities and fire fighting units have been activated, along with the engagement of 900 Macedonian Army soldiers, as well as the local population, said Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski at Thursday's Parliament session.

Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski Sunday met with the UN special envoy on Kosovo future status talks, Martti Ahtisaari, the Agency of Information reports.

At the meeting Ahtisaari informed Crvenkovski on his previous talks and positions of the negotiating teams of Pristina and Belgrade, which are included in the Kosovo future status talks. Ahtisaari stressed that it is important to be introduced with the opinions and positions of the neighbours during the process of talks.

Macedonian Minister of Labor and Social Policy Stevco Jakimovski and his Kosovo colleague Ibrahim Ramadani discussed Tuesday the issues of faster return of Kosovo refugees from Macedonia and signing of an agreement for mutual social insurance, MIA reported.

"We concluded that refugees must return to Kosovo, along with the assessment that the High Commissariat for Refugees should be engaged more intensively in the problem, since the Kosovo Government has no financial capacity to cover the costs for the return of these individuals", Minister Jakimovski said.

Skopje, January 24 - Macedonian Minister of Local Self-Government Aleksandar Gestakovski, representative of the UN Development Program Frode Mauring and Finnish Ambassador Birgitta Stenius-Mladenov signed yesterday an agreement worth Euro 1,5 million meant for development of the municipalities in Macedonia.

These funds were granted by the Finnish Government and the UNDP will carry out the project for municipal development.
