Red Cross is helping communities prepare for Tropical Cyclone Gita in Fiji as teams in Tonga and Samoa assist people already affected by the storm.

Gita crossed Samoa as a category two cyclone, causing widespread flooding, before hitting Tonga on Monday night as a category four cyclone. It is expected to intensify and may reach category five before hitting Fiji’s southern islands tonight.

New Zealand Red Cross aid workers are helping those affected by the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world right now – the influx of people into Bangladesh from neighbouring Myanmar.
More than 600,000 people have fled violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state since 25 August, joining another 200,000 who fled earlier. The arrival of so many people in such a short time has seriously strained resources and infrastructure in the Cox’s Bazar area, where authorities are trying to set up new camps to house the displaced people.

Youngsters at refugee camps in northern Greece have had their first ever dental appointments, thanks to Doctors of the World’s Mobile Dentistry Unit funded by the European Commission. Led by dentist Sofia Kouva, the three-person team has been at refugee camps in Ioannina and Thessaloniki, teaching youngsters how to care for their teeth, parents how to help, and of course giving their teeth a polish and shine as well.

New Zealand Red Cross is helping students return to their classrooms in Fiji's Ra province.

The classrooms at Vunikavikaloa Arya School are filled with noise – but it’s not excited students causing the commotion. It’s Red Cross volunteers and local villagers, hard at work with hammers, saws and drills.

The school, in Fiji’s Ra province, was badly damaged when Tropical Cyclone Winston tore across the country in February 2016. For the past year, children at Vunikavikaloa have been learning in tents in a back field.

From her perch on a pile of bricks, Makarita Racani watches a group of men hammer at the wooden skeleton of a house.

It’s not unusual to see Makarita sitting near the building site in the centre of Nukubalavu, a village on Fiji’s northern island of Vanua Levu. Since construction began a few weeks ago, the 79-year-old has kept a close eye on the builders, and with good reason - the house they are building is her new home.

Red Cross is preparing to welcome Colombian families to Nelson for the first time under the refugee quota.

Around 15 Colombians, four families or so, will arrive at the start of December after a six week orientation at the Mangere Refugee Resettlement Centre.

“The community has a long and proud history of successful resettlement that has enjoyed strong community support.”

The region is often hit by natural disasters with major cyclones devastating Vanuatu and Fiji in the past 18 months.

Aleta Miller of the UN Women's Fiji office says women are more affected than men in the aftermath and should be included in disaster management planning.

But she said aid agencies often cast women as victims first and risk ignoring what is truly needed.

New Zealand Red Cross has sent emergency supplies, including 2,400 tarpaulins, 1800 water containers and hundreds of first aid and shelter kits.

Kiwis have, so far, donated at least $160,000 to the New Zealand Red Cross Tropical Cyclone Pam appeal.

New Zealand Red Cross was first on the ground after Cyclone Pam slammed into Vanuatu on March 13, leaving immense devastation in its wake.

Low rainfall in Tonga over the past three months has resulted in extremely low water levels, particularly in the Ha’apai islands,which are still recovering from Tropical Cyclone Ian, which damaged homes and infrastructure, including water tanks and water collection systems.

Donna Collins, 48, a mother of fourfrom Whangarei says as a nurse and midwife she has a passion for helping people.

“I’d like to think if the tables were turned, other countries would come to our assistance. I feel 100% supported and safe, this kind of work is nothing new to me. I deal with bodily fluids on a daily basis and I am trained and experienced in following proper procedure.”
