A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck the Indonesian island of Lombok. The neighbouring island of Bali was also affected. At least 91 people are reported to have been killed with many more injured.

Rescue officials reported most of the damage hit Lombok's main city of Mataram where thousands of buildings were damaged, causing widespread power cuts. Many tourists headed for the airport which was affected, but still operational. Others fled for the beach where boats evacuated people to safety.

Interpretation

Between September 18 and 19, 2017 and only a few days after hurricane Irma, another powerful tropical cyclone, Maria, also classified as a category 5 hurricane, hit several islands of the Caribbean {mainly Dominica, Guadeloupe or Puerto Rico}. The islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique endured widespread flooding, damaged roofs and uprooted trees, and two deaths are reported in Guadeloupe.

On September 6, 2017, hurricane Irma, a powerful category 5 storm, has started to strike the Caribbean, in particular the French islands of Saint-Martin and Saint-Barthelemy which have been devastated.

This map presents the hurricane damage assessment over Marigot area in Saint-Martin, derived from the Pleiades imagery acquired the 08/09/2017. Highly and moderately affected buildings are reported, as well as damage on road network and harbour banks.

At midday on the 25th April 2015 Nepal was hit by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake also affecting surrounding countries. The epicentre was less than 80km from Kathmandu, the capital. Strong aftershocks reaching a magnitude of 7 .1 have further shook the area. The population has been badly affected and major damage to buildings is reported, especially in the district of Sindhupalchowk.
