On 2 - 3 May 2008 a massive cyclone (Nargis) hit Myanmar (Burma) affecting the lives of approximately 24 million people in 115 townships, according to United Nations (UN) estimates and collective assessments by the international communities. Winds of 200km per hour swept through the Irrawaddy Delta and the former capital of Yangon leaving devastation in its wake.

"My child has stopped talking" one woman says. "I have a boy who is 15 years old. Since the war he has become a bed-wetter. He can't go to the bathroom at night", says another. We are at the Ahli Ali Hospital in the centre of Gaza City. The hospital offers a psychosocial program to women once admitted at the hospital. It is a life saver, one woman says.

At Ahli Ali hospital 20 women are gathered for a three hours work shop.

The earthquake has changed many lives in West Sumatra. They've lost their houses and loved ones. Yusmaida, 43, is one of the earthquake-affected people in Pinjauan in the Sungai Limau sub-district of Padang Pariaman. Before the earthquake, at 7.9 on the Richter scale, hit West Sumatra on 30 September, she lived in a small house with her husband, six children, a son-in-law and three grandchildren. She earned her living running a food stall in a nearby school where her husband worked as a gardener.

Background:

Since the start of December, immediately following the Eid holidays in Pakistan, terrorist attacks have occurred at various key locations in Pakistan. Most attacks targeted government or military areas, but markets and a mosque were also attacked. On December 1, a Member of Provincial Assembly and two of his brothers were killed in Peshawar when a suicide attack occurred near his home.

Through the previous ACT Appeal, MRT091, Lutheran World Federation - Department of World Service (LWF-DWS) has provided support to people living in camps near Rosso, the capital of Trarza Region.

A series of earthquakes hit the Karonga district in northern Malawi between 6 December and 12 December 2009. One of the earthquakes registered 5.8 on Richter scale and completely razed many houses. One death was registered and more than 16 people were seriously injured and admitted to government hospitals. Many public institutions have been closed because of cracks and instability in buildings that has left them life-threatening if occupied. So far 16,512 people have been affected.

General Situation

In late November, UN OCHA hosted a review of the humanitarian response plan for West Sumatra that included participants from the Indonesian national and local government, UN cluster coordinators, and representatives of the many agencies serving in the area. The outcome of the review was the formation of an "Early Recovery Network" to bridge the gap between the emergency response and the reconstruction phase.

On 26 September 2009 Typhoon Ketsana (local name Ondoy) lashed the National Capital Region, Southern and Northern Luzon island with winds of 85 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 100 kilometers per hour. Within a period of less than two weeks, the Philippines was battered by a second super typhoon, namely Typhoon Parma (local name Pepeng) on 10 October 2009 causing further serious damage to an already devastated area.

ISLAMABAD-For vulnerable Pakistanis, lack of access to basic information on HIV is almost an epidemic in itself. But this epidemic spreads by misinformation and feeds on poverty, increased insecurity, a bias against women's rights and the taboo of discussing sexual health publicly.

El Salvador was hit by Hurricane Ida on 8 November with winds and up to 300 mm rainfalls in 6 hours. As a result, a total of 108 landslides, 13 major floods and 12 overflowing rivers were counted in seven of the country fourteen Departments. Floods and landslides completely destroyed 288 homes and damaged 1,835 houses. 37 bridges at least were damaged.
