Fiji Red Cross volunteers on standby since Tropical Cyclone Zena caused flooding in most parts of Fiji are now conducting assessments and distributing aid to affected settlements.

Heavy rain since Monday caused flash flooding and power cuts in several parts of Fiji, meaning volunteers were unable to reach some villages cut off by floodwaters, though distributions to areas not affected by flooding continued. The water level on many roads around Nadi and Rakiraki has now receded enough for Fiji Red Cross teams to get through.

Fiji Government estimates almost 40% of country's population have been affected by the cyclone

Suva, 31 March, 2016 – More than a month after Cyclone Winston left a trail of destruction across Fiji, thousands of people are still in need of urgent assistance.

The Fiji Government estimates that almost 350,000 people – 40% of the country’s population – have been affected by the Category 5 storm, the strongest ever to hit Fiji.

Fiji Red Cross Society (FRCS) received 75 tonnes of relief items valued at FJD$1.2 million from its counterparts in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The relief items include 1,215 tarpaulins, 1,350 shelter tool kits, 2,406 kitchen sets, family tents and jerry cans. The International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) Asia-Pacific zone office in Kuala Lumpur sent the additional relief items to assist FRCS with its relief work to those who were affected by Cyclone Winston.

As the scale of Tropical Cyclone Winston’s impact on Fiji becomes more apparent, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) today launched a seven million Swiss Franc (USD 7 million, Euro 6.4 million) international appeal to raise funds to support the ongoing emergency response efforts of the Fiji Red Cross Society.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on Monday 12th January, 2015, between the Fiji Red Cross Society (FRCS) and the Australian Government’s Fiji Community Development Program (FCDP).

Through FCDP, the Australian Government has committed to a total of AUD50,000 for emergency disaster relief that the FRCS can activate upon request from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO).

The Fiji Red Cross Society is providing much needed assistance to help the people of Naitasiri who are affected by the current drought. The assistance is through the provision of clean water to the affected areas.

The Fiji Red Cross team comprises of a Logistics Support Officer, who will also be operating the NOMAD unit and 2 Fiji Red Cross – Suva Branch volunteers.

Once again in our function as auxiliary to the Government of Fiji, a Technical Team of three staff from National Office were deployed to the Western Division to assist and support all branches on the 12th March in the Dengue Outbreak Campaign. Fiji Red Cross Branches in the Western Division mainly Sigatoka Branch, Nadi Branch, Lautoka Branch, Ba Branch, Tavua Branch and Rakiraki Branch have joined the Ministry of Health efforts in responding to the dengue outbreak that has so far seen 15,000 people with numbers continuing to rise.

After three months of hard work by the six targeted communities located in Vanua Levu, the Early Warning System project has been finally implemented. As part of the monitoring and evaluation a team from National Office visited the 6 communities and got to witness first hand a disaster drill take place with scenarios such as flooding, hurricanes and evacuation.

WEATHER UPDATE

Tropical Cyclone Kofi was located about 320 km East – Southeast of Ono I Lau at 3am today. It is moving Southeast at about 22km/hr. away from associated active cloud and rain bands are not expected to affect the Eastern part of the group with heavy rain,Occasional rain and possible thunderstorms over Southern Lau Group. Rain expected to clear from afternoon. This will be the last special weather bulletin on heavy rain.

The Asia Foundation was pleased to provide a grant of $55,000 FJD to the Fiji Red Cross Society (FRCS) for the project entitled “Early Warning Small Grants Scheme for At-Risk Communities in the Pacific”.

The grant was made possible through the generous support of the United States Agency for the International Development’s (USAID) Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (OFDA) under the Pacific Disaster Risk Management Programme Phase (PDRMP – 2) implemented by the Asia Foundation.
