One of Operation Atalanta’s main efforts is to protect vulnerable shipping carrying World Food Programme (WFP) aid to those who need it the most in Somalia and neighbouring countries. In July, some 14 900 irregular crossings were detected on the main migratory routes into the EU, 18% fewer than in the same month of last year.

We, the International Election Observer Missions present for the 30 July Harmonised Elections in Zimbabwe, while appreciating the generally peaceful and orderly pre-electoral environment and on voting day, express our grave concern about the regrettable outbreaks of post-election violence.

At the outset, we extend our sympathies to the families and loved ones of those affected by these troubling incidents.

While recognising the right to peaceful protest, we condemn vandalism and destruction of property and call on political party supporters to abide by the law.

There are an estimated 370 million indigenous people worldwide, living across 90 countries. They make up less than 5 per cent of the world's population, but account for 15 per cent of the poorest. Nevertheless, indigenous peoples contribute to the diversity and richness of civilizations and cultures and indeed to our common heritage. The EU, together with the rest of the world, celebrates this contribution on International Day for the World’s Indigenous Peoples.

The migration flow continued to decrease remaining largely under control; coordination and cooperation remain crucial

An array of response measures, ranging from coordinated enhancement of border-controls by the most affected countries to policy actions supported by the EU, introduced at the end of 2015 and maintained throughout 2016 and 2017, contributed to a marked reduction in the volume of the non-regional migration flow observed in the Western Balkans.

The common analysis and guidance note on Afghanistan are the result of a pilot process for the development of country guidance.

This pilot process was completed successfully with the endorsement of the guidance note by the EASO Management Board during its 28th meeting in June 2018. In addition to providing guidance on one of the main countries of origin for applicants for international protection in the EU, this pilot served as a basis for consolidating the methodology for development of country guidance, and as a model for future notes.
